Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer of Academic Institutes, the Associate Director, Development will serve as a senior professional staff member of the Community Relations & Development team and the primary development officer for the Department of Medicine and the Neurological and Neurosurgical Services divisions of Cedars-Sinai, specifically for programs and services within the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute, the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Department of Neurology. He/She will be responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors, concentrating on gifts of $250,000 or more. This includes collaborating with high level philanthropists and other volunteers in planning and implementing programs and events through various committees and Board leadership as well as working with physicians and scientists to help obtain funding for their research and clinical activities. While the Associate Director, Development will concentrate much attention on grateful patients, support group members and other volunteers, he/she will also develop relationships with new constituents and have working knowledge of deferred gift vehicles.
In addition to direct fundraising responsibilities, the Associate Director, Development will lead a team of professional senior fundraisers and support staff in assigned scientific/medical areas of fundraising. He/She will manage all aspects of his/her team's personnel initiatives including hiring, firing, training, evaluating, and counseling.
Some specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Planning and managing a comprehensive development program for the assigned areas in the context of the larger Community Relations & Development Department.
- Developing long term relationships with high capacity donors leading to closing and stewarding "ultimate" and "high impact" gifts for the benefit of Cedars-Sinai.
- Developing networks of donors leading to the identification of new potential high capacity donors by working with the medical staff, volunteers, and other lay leadership and members of the community.
- Tracking prospects, developing and implementing customized strategies for cultivation and solicitation of each prospect, including setting goals, objectives and a set of "moves" leading to closing gifts.
- Collaborating with other areas of the development matrix to best serve donors and prospects, including teams such as Corporate & Foundation Relations, Development Events, Planned Giving, Communications, Donor Relations, and various Support Groups.
- Representing Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Academic Institutes team in a positive and professional manner, both inside and outside of the hospital.
- Maintaining up to date knowledge of philanthropic trends; creating templates and presentations to educate and demonstrate best practices for colleagues; and volunteering to conduct workshops and give presentations at professional meetings and conferences.

The successful candidate will be a sophisticated communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with hospital leaders, physicians and researchers, staff colleagues, donors, and a variety of volunteers. The successful candidate must be an articulate and persuasive presenter to large and small groups and particularly to individuals. He/She should be an independent thinker but also a team player who works well collectively and collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals. An intuitive sense of the whole enterprise must be combined with a practical, project orientation.
The Associate Director, Development must demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence, be sincere, well organized, and focused with a goal-oriented work style. A high level of integrity, initiative, creativity, and confidentiality is required. He/She should be politically astute and an open, communicative, strong, and confident professional. He/She must have a high degree of discretion and sensitivity with confidential information and communications. A good sense of humor will be valued.
CAREER TRACK LEADING TO THIS POSITION:
The successful candidate will be a seasoned development professional with a successful track record of raising seven figure gifts, and ideally eight figure gifts. A minimum of ten years prior development/fundraising and management experience is required, with ideally eight years as a front-line gift officer and five years of frontline gift officer management. He/She must be comfortable working with affluent individuals, world class researchers and grateful patients. In addition to successful major gift experience, candidates should also have some knowledge of planned giving instruments and opportunities. Healthcare experience or some knowledge of science or medicine would be strongly desirable.
An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is strongly preferred. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Raisers Edge 7 is strongly preferred.
