Job Title : Sales Engineer - Cloud

Team : Sales Engineering

Department : Sales and Business Development

Location: Home based with broadband (West Coast US ideally)

Travel Requirements: Travel requirements vary but approximately 50% including international travel

Role summary

Ubuntu is the fastest growing Linux distribution, with over 20 million users globally. Our goal within the Sales and Business Development division is to take the Ubuntu Desktop/Server/Cloud platform to business customers and partners. Canonical provides commercial support, consulting and training services to customers and partners who are deploying Ubuntu, but also supports partners and technical staff to provide best practices and guidance across their projects.

Ubuntu is the most widely deployed OS in the cloud space, and a leader in both public and private cloud deployments.

This role is responsible for providing technical input to assist the sale of support and services to both corporate customers and partners, This includes understanding the customer's requirements, providing technology input during the sales process and designing appropriate solutions using Ubuntu and Canonical technologies. You will be a technically focussed primary point of contact for through the whole project.

This role is suitable for someone who enjoys customer contact, presenting technical content to audiences both technical and non-technical, technical solutions architecture and solving customer problems. You'll need to be comfortable in a fast-paced environment and enjoy a challenge.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

Strong technical leadership on all things Cloud, especially Openstack

Provide technical assistance to the sales team and partners

Technically verify customer requirements and convert them into appropriate solutions

Prepare and present technical sales collateral such as presentations, how to guides, and technical comparison documents.

Architect, propose and present custom technical solutions

Ensure that customer deliverables for deployment projects are delivered on time, and with the required quality level.

Maintain any necessary customer contact until project is completed

Consistently deliver a high level of customer service

Acquire the technical and product skills required to meet customer requirements

Ensure that any partners or channel contacts you are allocated are kept up to date with regular updates on Ubuntu and Canonical news and information.

Depending on your region you may occasionally be required to wholly or partially implement a solution or Proof of Concept for a customer

Required skills and experience

Proven commercial experience in a similar role

Advanced Linux

Hands on experience with Intel hardware servers and desktops. Additional experience with UNIX based systems a plus.

Hands on experience with storage and network equipment in an enterprise setting.

Ability to quickly learn and understand new technologies used in the datacenter

Hands on experience with one or more of the following in each category:

Cloud technologies – Openstack, Cloudstack, Eucalyptus, VMware Vcloud

Active Directory integration of Linux desktops into Windows Infrastructure

OpenLDAP/eDirectory/FDS – Directory Services

High Availability Clustering (RHCS, Veritas, other) – File Systems, Servers, Databases

Application Servers – J2EE (WebSphere, JBoss, BEA, other)

Virtualisation Technologies – ESX Server, Xen, KVM

Internet Infrastructure Services - Apache HTTPD, FTP Servers, DNS, etc...

Database Technologies: Oracle, DB2, Postgres, MySQL

Experience in delivering an enterprise-class system, cradle to grave

General understanding of the Linux kernel, ability to perform advanced troubleshooting (debuggers, network sniffers, etc...)

Ability to manage multiple issues and projects while maintaining a high level of detail.

Effectively manage and grow existing enterprise customer and partner relationships.

Experience managing customer relationship: consulting, account management, or direct support.

Advanced Scripting, some programming and Linux software packaging experience a must

Relevant IT certification at engineer level, such as RHCE, LPIC-2, CNE, etc, nice-to-have

3+ years or equivalent of sales engineering or consultancy experience

5+ years or equivalent experience in Linux or UNIX system administration or development.

Extensive knowledge of Linux and Open Source in enterprise organisations

Consultative selling or customer service experience

Excellent communications and presentation skills, both verbal and written

Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation

Fluent in English
