Upper Iowa University invites applications for a vertebrate/wildlife biologist at the rank of Assistant Professor of Biology in the Division of Science and Mathematics, available starting in Fall 2012. This is a nine month, tenure-track position. The teaching load is 24 credit hours per year for course loads containing laboratories (typically six courses). The successful candidate would teach a non-majors course in biology and Principles of Biology II, the second course in the freshman biology sequence, which introduces students to organismal biology, ecology and evolution. The other courses would be upper-level biology courses within the candidate's area of expertise, and could include the following: Ecology, Conservation Biology, Ornithology, Mammalogy and Wildlife Management.
A PhD in biology or related field is required. It is expected that candidates will complement existing faculty strengths in a small department and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, as well as the flexibility and desire to teach a wide range of courses. In addition, candidates will advise students, supervise undergraduate research projects and serve on division and university committees.
Teaching assignments are predominantly face-to-face on the Fayette campus, but may require teaching as needed in hybrid, online, domestic center, and international center modalities. The successful applicant is expected to complete training for online teaching during the 2012-2013 academic year.
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until position is filled although applications received by May 14, 2012 will receive full consideration. Applicants should submit, in Microsoft WORD or PDF format, a letter of application, statement of teaching philosophy, CV, names and contact information for three professional references, and unofficial graduate transcripts to savagem@uiu.edu.
