Due to the growth and expansion of Sequenom Center for Molecular Medicine’s laboratory in RTP, we are seeking to hire a Facilities Technician. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this position will be responsible for maintaining Sequenom facilities by ensuring all facility equipment and systems are functioning, clean, orderly, and compliant with applicable regulations. This position will perform day to day operations, troubleshooting, and maintenance and repair of building equipment. The ideal candidate will have prior biotech, pharmaceutical or laboratory experience.

  • Manage major facility systems and infrastructure including; computerized building control and monitoring systems, power and lighting systems, compressed gasses and vacuum, air supply and ventilation, DI water systems, sanitary facilities and plumbing
  • Act as a contact for any building issues, including: climate control, odors, smoke, spills, damage, emergencies and repair
  • Monitor contractor performance and work closely with outside vendors and contractors to ensure work is completed according to specifications
  • Assist with maintaining building security and immediately respond to building emergencies on a 24-hour basis
  • Solicit bids and quotes from vendors for specified maintenance and repair projects
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs and basic electrical work, and determine when outside assistance is required and arrange accordingly
  • Perform routine equipment repair and installation of laboratory and office furniture, fixtures, and equipment
  • Manage hazardous waste disposal per regulations
  • Coordinate and assist with office moves as requested; dismantle and install furniture
  • Assist in administration of building physical security and access control systems
  • Maintain parking lots, stairwells and walkways and assist with grounds cleanup maintenance duties
  • Fulfill requests for ongoing and special room needs and meeting setups
  • Operate a Company motor vehicle to transport supplies and furniture between office locations, including operation of forklift as required

Job Requirements

The Ideal Candidate will have:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of previous facilities experience, preferably in a laboratory or biotech environment
  • Experience in the maintenance/facilities trades, formal apprenticeship or on-the job training preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel)
  • Knowledge of general facilities safety practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning repairs and maintenance
  • Knowledge of temperature calibration practices highly desired
  • Ability to work safely with hazardous materials, including hazardous waste
  • Valid driver’s license, and ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to manipulate equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work on a ladder for routine actions such as replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles
  • Good manual dexterity, with the ability to use hand-tools
  • Ability to read and understand facilities drawings, handbook formulas, and a variety of maintenance and repair related equipment, including measuring instruments such as caliper and scale
  • Ability to work the following schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00pm.
