BASE LOCATION: DC, LA, San Francisco REPORT TO: Senior Executive Producer —Investigative Unit via Investigative Senior Producer/Reporter SUPERVISE: Investigative Associate Producer KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES: Supporting creative process of developing story pitches and brainstorming storytelling approaches. Developing sources of information to obtain exclusive information deemed valuable by Senior Executive Producer —Investigative Unit. Conducting extensive research and reviewing interview transcripts to identify editorial themes. Assisting the field production and in-house production of our exclusive stories with the highest editorial standards.
Arranging investigative filming logistics, for our own unit and for those involved in our investigations (freelance, fixers, translators, sources, etc.) Scouring video archive for relevant footage. Transcribing interviews and highlighting areas of inconsistencies or portions that merit further investigation. Acting as second shooter while maintaining awareness. Providing timely and candid information to the Investigative Senior Investigative Producer/Reporter, and Senior Executive Producer on investigative developments.
Undertaking official travel and assignments domestically and worldwide with little to no notice. Safeguarding investigative information and maintaining any assigned unit equipment including laptops, editing and filming equipment. OTHER RESPONSIBILITES: Perform other duties relevant to the job as requested by the Investigative Senior Producer/Reporter and Senior Executive Producer of the Investigative Unit. EDUCATION EXPERIENCE: A bachelor ’s degree from an accredited university.
Mature producer with a major news network with an understanding of domestic and international affairs. SKILLS: Conversationalist who shows promise as a newsgatherer. Basic writing for broadcast television as well as ability to write for print (web articles). Assisting the television directors, both in field and in studio, including use of advanced lighting, sound, and tracking techniques.
Studies large volumes of data, interview transcripts, and pictures to understand editorial themes. Video journalist trained (basic film and edit) to fulfil role of second shooter as needed. Discreet, and carefully protects sources of information. Fluent in use of investigative databases, including FOIA, CMS, and preferably some background in computer assisted reporting methods (CAR).
Social Media strategist to promote Investigative Unit content. KNOWLEDGE: Understanding the identity of those who hold information and make news. Basic knowledge of broadcast television, with experience in the field of investigative journalism. Knowledge of politics (national and international), governance and awareness of content broadcast across other AJMN platforms.
ABILITIES: Handles the stress of frequent travel with little to no notice. Keeps investigative records and performs paperwork in support of Senior Executive Producer and Investigative Senior Producer/Reporters as requested. Uses discretion when handling sources of information and actively seeks guidance. Shows patience and maturity to let investigations develop, without rushing or forcing events to take place.
Initiative to immerse oneself in new subject matters with the determination to become as expert as possible as fast as possible. Maintains situational awareness and alerts Senior Executive Producer and teammates of any dangers or developing issues.
