Full-time Assistant in Research position available immediately at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS), Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida.
Developing and maintaining scripts and cron jobs on Linux operating system; Developing and maintaining satellite and marine meteorological data processing codes (C, C++, Perl, IDL); Developing software for combining and manipulating data sets, including large (100+ GB) data sets; Developing and maintaining machine-to-machine data services (Linked data, JSON, XML, etc.); Participation in national and international data management working groups (including travel and making presentations at relevant meetings); Lead programmer for team-oriented code development projects to support research and operational activities; Working with graduate and undergraduate programmers in a team environment; Writing technical documentation for use by science team and user community; Timely task status reporting to supervisors; Managing code versions; Maintaining code systems to back-up critical computer resources.
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, or Computer Informatics, or a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, or Computer Informatics and three years related professional experience; Proficiency in C, C++, or similar base language; Proficiency in script programming (including cron jobs) in a Linux operating environment; Experience with machine-to-machine web service concepts (JSON, Linked data, XML, etc.); Strong English language and communication skills; Ability to make presentations at scientific meetings and write technical documentation; Strong interpersonal skills; Ability to learn new programming languages; Willingness to travel; Ability to work under strict deadlines. Position requires successful completion of a Level 2 background check with fingerprinting, and compliance with Florida State University confidentiality policies.
Preferred knowledge and skills:
Familiarity with Interactive Data Language (IDL) or MatLab; Familiarity with Geospatial Information Systems/mapping concepts; Experience with Perl; Experience working with large (100+ GB) data sets; Experience with Wiki and code versioning systems (i.e., Subversion, Git); Working knowledge of SQL databases; Willingness to support development of computer and informatics proposals.
