What You'll Do
Works with principal investigators or more senior laser-effects research engineers in a laboratory environment to design, conduct, and reduce laser-effects measurements. Laser effects include both high-energy weapon effects and lower-powered laser-induced signatures. Typical assignments may include several of the following: set-up, operation, and maintenance of CO 2 , COIL, solid-state lasers (pulsed and continuous wave) and associated support equipment; contribute to test-plan development and documentation; calibration of test equipment; development of software tools to control/operate equipment or reduce data; design and fabrication of test equipment and test fixtures; operation or maintenance of vacuum systems; operation or maintenance of cryogenic and cooling systems, and associated facility equipment; design, operation and data reduction of thermal, optical or mechanical data; optical beam-train development and implementation; and other general laboratory operations and routine maintenance. Support and maintain all applicable laboratory environmental, occupational, health and safety procedures.
What You Need
Emerging professional with frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques associated with laser-related experimental design implementation and general research laboratory operations. Familiar with laser systems, optics, and common thermal and mechanical instrumentation methods. General knowledge of other related disciplines (electronics, materials, thermodynamics, and vacuum systems). Demonstrated experience in ensuring that experimental plans or approaches are technically correct and meet stated objective. Familiar with broad range of laboratory instruments, data-acquisition and control equipment, software tools, calibration techniques, requirements developments, and graphical display methods. Solid verbal and written communication skills. Familiar with industry-standard environmental and safety practices.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline is strongly preferred, plus 2 or more years of related experience.

Successful applicant for this position must be eligible to obtain a DoD clearance. A current DoD clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoD clearance within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance.
In addition to the typical educational and experience requirements, a demonstrated capability to adequately perform the essential functions and responsibilities of the position and exhibit the skills and competencies of the grade level should be considered. Each higher level degree may substitute for two years of related experience. Related experience may be considered in lieu of education.
