The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

DUTIES:
The Nephrology section of the Birmingham VA Medical Center’s Acute Care Service is seeking to add an experienced Board Eligible/ Board Certified , staff Nephrologist with current teaching and research experience to assist with our growing veteran population. The successful candidate must have expertise in: (i) Directing a clinic focused on managing inherited renal disorders such as Polycystic kidney disease and Tuberous sclerosis, (ii) Interventional nephrology, in particular proficiency in real-time ultrasound-guided renal biopsy procedures; (iii) Renal transplantation; (iv) Education, e.g., development of state-of-the-art teaching tools/resources; and (v) Independently funded translational research covering both basic and clinical science studies. Ideal candidate should demonstrate his/her strengths in all of these areas by a strong publication record.

The selected candidate will have a joint academic appointment with the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology, at the Assistant Professor level or higher depending upon qualifications. Priority will be given to candidates whose commitment to teaching and record of research demonstrate their leadership in Nephrology.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school.

Licensure : Physicians (Except Residents): Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States , or in the District of Columbia . The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country; Residents: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States , or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Physical Standards: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
