Duties & Responsibilities: Collects, codes, verifies and processes payroll information and related transactions. Answers questions from customers, government agencies and payroll administration companies; maintains records and files; and provides technical support to assigned area. May serve as lead worker.

  • Enters, processes/transmits and proofs payroll data.
  • Reviews and/or reconciles payroll records, identifies errors and makes corrections.
  • Verifies time and attendance records, and computes/reconciles employee deductions for wages, taxes, benefits and other withholdings.
Processes and enters garnishments, levies, and other court ordered payments into payroll.
  • Audits paychecks for accuracy of preparation and posting.
  • Performs limited general clerical responsibilities related to payroll functions.
  • Responds to requests for information and assistance. Uses discretion to maintain confidentiality of records.
  • May administer employee benefits programs and provide information on options, coverage, claims processes, payments, deductions, deferred compensation or other transactions.
  • Performs job responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Serves as job expert or organization resource in assigned areas.
Technical Competencies

  • Ability to accurately enter data in accordance with agency policies and procedures.

  • Ability to determine reasons for discrepancies and correct identified discrepancies.
  • Knowledge of agency time and attendance policies as it relates to payroll related functions.

  • Ability to communicate program related information to customers.
  • Ability to maintain records and files in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Knowledge of all benefit-related programs.
  • Ability to process customer requests.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines as it relates to payroll.
  • Ability to calculate third party deductions.
  • Ability to provide information to third parties as needed.
  • Ability to process third party deductions in automated system.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines as it relates to payroll.
  • Knowledge of tax laws.
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize work and schedule.
Minimum Training & Experience: High School Diploma or GED and three years of payroll, clerical or related experience OR One year at the lower level or position equivalent (FIT051)

Agency Specific Qualifications and/or Preferred Qualifications: •One year experience using the State of Georgia PeopleSoft HCM System (all payroll modules) AND
  • One year experience using the State of Georgia PeopleSoft Financials System (A/P Module)
  • Additional year(s) of experience using the State of Georgia PeopleSoft System (HCM and Financials) is highly desirable
  • Experience handling payroll for multiple locations (such as regional offices) is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written formats
