The African American Academic Network is seeking applications for two full- time Academic Counselors/Advisors. The Counselor/Advisor is responsible for providing developmental, academic, social, and personal advising as well as specialized retention services that assists undergraduate program participants with course selection, academic planning, personal growth, and development .

Duties:
The primary duties of the Academic Counselor/Advisor include: teaching ASP courses to provide transition strategies from high school to university for first time freshmen; developing and conducting workshops on topics related to student academic success; developing student educational activities that engage students and their parents; developing and implementing retention programs and strategies; establishing relationships with faculty and departmental administrators on behalf of students; and collaborating with academic partners, alumni and other constituents in developing activities that strengthens student education, using a variety of student development theories and practices.

Qualifications:

Qualifications for this position include a Bachelor's degree (Masters Degree preferred) and 3 to 5 years’ experience in higher education, student learning and counseling. A strong knowledge of student development theory and academic programming, plus a working knowledge of university academic policies, federal guidelines regarding financial aid, academic records, college entrance procedures and available student resources are desired.

Candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; an ability to work with diverse populations; awareness and sensitivity to socio-ethnic and cultural communication styles; and a proficiency in Microsoft Office products – Word and Excel.
