The Department of Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Field Specialist - Dairy. Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Field Specialist provides educational program leadership in the application of knowledge, grounded in research-based science, to help Iowans and agricultural industry prosper. The educational leadership responsibilities of this position will include the following areas of dairy production: 1) connecting the northeast Iowa dairy community (dairy producers plus service-providers) to appropriate ISU resources, and 2) developing and delivering educational programming to support the needs of dairy producers and service-providers.
The primary focus of this position will be developing and delivering research-based information and education programs, and facilitating development/support of coalitions that build management capacity within Iowa dairy industry participants. The incumbent will assess dairy needs on an on-going basis, build a network of resources and clientele, and foster collaboration and partnering. Information and/or education delivery will be carried out through a variety of methods including: written materials, presentations directly to producers in both face-to-face and small group settings, and will often be in conjunction with and through dairy industry partners, including the ISU Dairy Team and the Northeast Iowa Community-Based Dairy Foundation. Other clientele groups and partners may include other agribusinesses, educational institutions, governmental agencies, farm and conservation organizations and the mass media.
Further, the incumbent will participate in extramural grant and contract opportunities and be active in revenue generation within the programmatic efforts. Programmatic leadership will be provided through the ISU Dairy Team. The position also brings subject-matter expertise to interdisciplinary teams addressing priority issues. Subject matter leadership will be provided through the College of Agriculture and Life Science's Departments of Animal Science and the Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine department within the College of Veterinary Medicine. Additional collaborators will include the departments of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, Economics, Agronomy, Food Science and Human Nutrition.
Finally, the incumbent will have the opportunity to be involved with the ISU research programs, either in conjunction with ISU faculty or in demonstration projects conducted in the field. Applied research leadership could be provided through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' Research and Demonstration Farms or ISU faculty with dairy research responsibility. Cooperates with and informs Regional Directors, County Councils, County Extension Staff, Field Specialists, and Program Director of their projects and has a positive working relationship with staff and clients in assigned geographical and subject matter areas.
This position will be filled at the Field Specialist I or II level. In addition to duties above, a Field Specialist II will create and deliver comprehensive and complex programming; conduct needs assessment activities and identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients' needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary programming; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise at the local, area and state level.
The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals and groups. The candidate will also have the ability to establish partnerships with community leaders. Strong organizational skills are also a necessity as this position will be expected to work on multiple projects.
Field Specialist I: Bachelor's degree in Dairy Science, Animal Science or closely related field and three years of related experience.
Field Specialist II: Bachelor's degree in Dairy Science, Animal Science or closely related field and five years of related experience or a Master's degree in Dairy Science, Animal Science or closely related field and three years of related experience.
Experience must be at a comparable level directly related to the duties of the position.
Master's degree in field stated above.
Additional years of experience.
Experience in the agri-business industry.
Experience teaching and/or programming efforts in an agricultural field.
Experience communicating with a wide range of audiences, including agricultural clientele and the mass media.
Commensurate with education and experience.
This position serves the Northeast Iowa area and works with both a statewide dairy team and a four state dairy team. Base location will be in Northeast Iowa, but the specific location is negotiable.
