In the roll of a Nurse Practitioner, acts as a liaison between Mercy Medical Center, Mercy ER Physicians, Iowa Heart Physicians and Mercy Hospitalists. Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for the evaluation, physical assessment, and assignment of patients to the appropriate specialty physician based on established protocols. Provides the full coordination of referred or transferring patients from outlying facilities and assumes the acceptance and assignment of unassigned patients.
Will provide clinical services at Mercy West Lakes and Mercy main campus as assigned.
Acts as a liaison between Mercy Hospital, ED Physicians, Iowa Heart Physicians, and Mercy Hospitalists in assessing and triaging patients based on established protocols.
Secures a complete health history, performs a complete physical exam, and assesses patient condition.
Initiates appropriate standing orders as dictated by diagnosis.
Orders appropriate lab work, x-rays, ultrasounds, etc. as indicated
Refers patients to specialty or sub-specialty physicians and medical facilities as indicated by the patient's problem, after consultation with the Iowa Heart Cardiologist and or Mercy Hospitalists.
Communicates with the Iowa Heart Cardiologist and or the Mercy Hospitalists regarding condition and disposition.
Reports results and pertinent information to patients and health care team members.
Evaluates patient and family understanding of treatment plan and/or instructions.
Prescribes drugs and medical devices under the conditions stated in Chapter 148C, 3235.71 of the Iowa Code
Present appropriate cases to the collaborating physicians for consultations.
Accurately and legibly documents all patient interaction in patient record according to hospital policy. Prepares and completes medical records on the same date of the visit.
Receives phone calls from referring physicians and facilities regarding admissions to hospital based on established protocols. Would assist with and coordinate all aspects of transfer arrangements including the following:
o Acts as first call point for outside admissions
o Connects the needed physician consultant here at Mercy with the referring physician
o Works with Room and Bed for assignment of bed.
o Forwards calls to Mercy One for patient transport if necessary.
o Receives all incoming phone and fax reports of medical information to assist with the medical care.
o Forwards call from the referring facility so staff can provide a status report to the receiving unit.
Acts as first call for unassigned patients and non medical staff patients to be admitted following established protocols.
Participates in monthly case reviews and attends mandatory meetings as assigned.
Participates in Rapid Response Team as requested.
Functions according to limitations or scope of license.
Demonstrates ability to recognize and assess emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures as needed. Must be CPR certified.
Master's degree in Nursing.
Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
One year of previous Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
Current State RN/ARNP license with prescriptive authority.
