Assists with technical writing and editing of computer system documentation, automated information systems documents, and electronic bulletin boards. Maintains proper methodology for purposes of consistency and efficiency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Duties and responsibilities which occupy a major portion of time and importance in the job. Incumbent may perform one or more of the following duties.)
a. Researches, organizes, writes, edits, and produces data for use in a wide variety of complex technical publications requiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
b. Plans, writes, and maintains systems and user support documentation efforts, including online help screen.
c. Researches, develops, and writes content for printed manuals, documentation, and supporting materials for software, hardware, technical procedures, and computer-related services.
d. Writes, organizes, enters, and compiles online help files to support end users.
e. Maintains documentation and publications relating to users, systems, programming, operations, products, and services.
f. Gathers and researches technical information, including engineering and development information, for use in documentation activities.
g. Interviews programmers, engineers, developers, and other technical personnel to become familiar with product technology and development methods.
h. Maintains understanding of applications and levels of user proficiency.
i. Assists with preparation of written documents following standard guidelines for technical publications.
j. Assists with layout and organization of documentation.
k. Reviews and revises previously created documentation.
l. Creates graphical images, flow charts, and diagrams for inclusion in documentation. Coordinates with graphics and printing production personnel or vendors to produce documentation.
m. Reviews, edits, and proofreads materials written by others.
n. Reviews and tests software and hardware for accuracy and consistency with documentation, identifying problems and suggesting revisions.

b. Supervision Received – Reports to Senior/Lead Tech Writer; majority of assignments are performed under minimal supervision in accordance with guidance based on internal procedures and conventionally accepted technical writing standards.

- Education/Experience – B.S. degree in a communication or technical discipline, or three years of experience as a technical writer and/or editor. Relevant and equivalent experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
- Skills/Certifications/Training – Must demonstrate understanding of software development life cycle, and have experience in written communication. Familiarity with conventions in form, structure, and notation of technical writing. The candidate will be highly motivated and work well both independently and in a team environment. Must be a self-starter. Previous technical experience highly desired. Knowledge of Unified Modeling Language (UML) highly desired. Technical requirements: functional knowledge in a wide range of technologies such as ASP, COM+, Visual Basic, HTML, VB Script, RDBMS (SQL Server, Oracle specifically), IIS, NT, Windows.
