Description of work: The FPG Child Development Institute is conducting a statewide NC Pre-K Program evaluation designed to provide information that can be used to determine program effectiveness for children, program improvement, and decision-making for future activities and funding for North Carolina’s statewide Pre-K program for at-risk children. Responsibilities include gathering, preparing, managing, organizing, and summarizing data for the evaluation. Data can include classroom observations, surveys, child assessment, and others.
Data Collection: This function includes:
•Training to reliability on data collection procedures and measures and maintaining reliability throughout project; contacting participating sites & teachers;
•Collecting data (e.g., classroom quality measures, child assessments & surveys) at participating sites;
•Scheduling and coordinating data collection sites & appointments;
•Preparing evaluation data forms prior to site visits;
•Interviewing agency personnel or school employees;
•Completing all data collection forms carefully, accurately, and thoroughly;
•Following detailed instructions to collect data according to evaluation protocol;
•Working in a team of data collectors to ensure data collection is completed to a high degree of accuracy & in a timely manner.
Data Management: This function involves:
•Scoring data, reviewing for accuracy, cleaning, and coding data after completion;
•Ensuring that all data are identified and labeled correctly;
•Preparing data by tracking via project website
•Entering data as needed;
•Maintaining records on the status of evaluation data according to project protocol
•Communicating updates to project staff at FPG ;
•Organizing and maintaining secure temporary data storage; reviewing entered data for possible errors and verifying data entry as needed.
General project duties: This function involves
•Scheduling data evaluation visits by making phone calls to sites and sending follow-up letters;
•Maintaining confidentiality regarding data and participants;
•Communicating regularly with your supervisor in Chapel Hill, NC via meetings, conference calls, plus other telephone contacts and e-mail as needed;
•Mailing data to FPG according to evaluation project protocol;
•Tracking and distributing incentives as needed to teachers in evaluation project and keeping accurate records to ensure that incentives are accounted for at all times;
•Completing travel & per diem reimbursement documentation accurately and submitting to FPG administration staff weekly;
•Completing additional tasks, e.g., attend additional training or meetings, participating in basic project coordination, as assigned by supervisor;
•Maintaining supplies of materials needed for data collection & order supplies, when authorized;
•Provide input and/or assistance in completing reports regarding evaluation project when requested.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in early childhood, psychology, education, human development, or related fields. Experience in collecting data, preferably classroom observation scales or conducting individual child assessments. Experience with young children and/or school settings. Reliable car and valid driver’s license required. Willingness to travel to all areas in NC. Some overnight trips.
Candidate must be able to use MS Word, Excel, email and the Internet for web-based databases. Must be highly organized, detail-oriented and have excellent communication skills. Strong preference for candidates with experience in conducting classroom observations and/or child assessments using standardized measures such as WJ III , ECERS or CLASS .
Special Physical and Mental Requirements: Position requires ability to travel to and from community locations. Visual attention, mental concentration and manipulative skills are required during classroom observation to accurately observe the interactions between the teachers and children, take notes and score measures. Approved DMV background check is requisite.
