The Research Assistant assists in the day-to-day facility operations. Plan for the best utilization of the facilities for both current and future use. Organize, coordinate and supervise various lab tasks and maintenance. Responsible for equipment regarding locations, arrangements for repair and operations. Work closely with REM to comply with current institutional and biosafety rules and regulations. Responsible for hazard assessment of a variety of Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) viruses including developing and implementing safe handling practices and standard operating procedures. Perform scientific experiments to meet research objectives. Oversee cell culture maintenance. Maintain cell and E. coli stocks. Report status of projects to principal investigator. Improve current skills and learn new techniques to support new initiatives developed by faculty. Oversee spending and purchases for the research group. Hire, train and supervise undergraduate students. Provide leadership and training of cell culture and virology techniques to users such as graduate students, post-docs, lab technicians and collaborators.

Required:
Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or Molecular Biology.
One year combined experience in molecular biology, biochemical techniques, virology and cell culture.
Ability to oversee a large, multi-user research laboratory without immediate supervision.

Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques and ability to analyze scientific results.

Ability to use discretion and independent judgment in all areas of research including choosing methods and strategies and avoiding loss of valuable research time and resources.

Willingness to be trained and carry out experiments in Biological Safety Level 2 and 3 ( BSL2 and BSL3) using safe work practices and procedures.

Superior organizational skills.

Ability to oversee a large, multi-user research laboratory without immediate supervision.

Able to solicit and evaluate advice from and interact with appropriate professionals (i.e. sales reps, plumbers, electricians, repairmen, etc.) to maintain laboratories and equipment in optimal condition.

Capable of using independent judgment for purchases.

Ability to determine needed equipment and supplies for BSL-3 and BSL-2 facilities and laboratories, ability to oversee laboratory spending and coordinate purchases for research group.

Working knowledge of cell culture techniques, virology techniques, gel electrophoresis, and molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation and purification, PCR, and cloning.
Able to analyze scientific results.

An above average attention to detail.

Able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

Able to research or develop new techniques and be capable of evaluating and recommending new approaches.

Willing to learn/travel to keep abreast of new developments in the field.

Able to teach others current techniques and use the equipment related to the research projects.

Able to balance the research and supervisory components of this position.

Ability to lift and carry 10 pounds frequently and 20 pounds occasionally.

Preferred:
Completion of course in Safe Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL3) Work Practices and Procedures or other related course.

Experience in mass spectrometry relating to proteomics or metabolomics.

Additional Information:
A valid driver's license is necessary for employment in this position.
This position requires occasional travel of 1-2 days duration for training sessions/courses.

A background check will be required for employment in this position.

FLSA: Exempt (Not Eligible For Overtime)
