Manages the daily hospital and physician practice HIMS operations for work areas such as: Release of Information, Scanning and Indexing, Record Completion (including deficiency analysis, monitoring and reporting), Master Patient Index, HIMS Policies/Procedures and Record Retention and Maintenance. Responsibilities include care, custody and control, and release of medical information (in both paper and electronic format); ensuring timely, accurate and consistent completion of documentation. Monitors workflow in department and develops new procedures, as necessary, to enhance performance and productivity. Responsible for coordinating activities in support of external regulatory compliance (i.e. The Joint Commission, HIPAA, CMS) and serves on various local and enterprise committees. Serves as the point person for The Joint Commission’s Record of Care standards and Information Management standards. May lead initiatives and/or participate in partnerships with physician leadership to provide institutional governance and oversight, and facilitate policy development and implementation. As Privacy Officer, serves as primary source for HIPAA related issues.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field. Requires 1-2 years progressive experience in HIMS with a minimum of 2-5 years managerial or supervisory experience. Demonstrated strength in leadership, interpersonal, analytical, organizational, technical, communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to facilitate change projects and work collaboratively with diverse, multidisciplinary teams. Broad-based knowledge of HIMS practices with experience in design and implementation of computer-based patient records. Knowledge of external regulatory agency standards and requirements specific to health information management. Core competency requirements include high standards of personal integrity and ethics, ability to communicate a vision of the future and establish long-term performance goals and standards, and ability to challenge and empower employees.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with others is required. Proficient in the use of personal computers. Prior experience with electronic medical records systems and technologies required.
License or Certification:
Certification through AHIMA as RHIA &/or RHIT required.
