Canonical has recently launched its Ubuntu operating system for the mobile industry. We launched Ubuntu for smartphones at the CES show in Las Vegas in early January. Ubuntu on smartphones is stunning, beautifully designed, and intuitive. It offers a much improved and affordable smartphone experience for the consumer market. For the enterprise market it offers a totally new “superphone” solution: the high-end smartphone with Ubuntu becomes a fully fledged desktop when connected to a keyboard and monitor. Ubuntu on smartphones received excellent reviews, and we are in the process of discussing go-to-market plans with early launch partners.
We are now looking for a customer and relationship marketing expert to support our business development efforts in the emerging markets, North America, Latin America and Asia.
The role of the Customer Marketing Manager is a six month contracting role as part of the phone sales and marketing project team - with a potential permanent role at the end of the contract period.
The Customer Marketing Manager will drive all planning , coordination and a large part of the execution of customer outreach programs in view of securing new network operator and hardware OEM partners.
He/she has previous experience of working with a software vendor or hardware OEM - and understands well the value chain of different players in the mobile industry. He/she will also have an excellent understanding on how to support sales and business development teams in lead generation, and follow up as well as in customer relationship management through e.g. events and roadshow activities. The successful candidate will preferably have strong experience in one of the key emerging markets of India or China, or the Asia region. The role will coordinate the marketing engagements related to Ubuntu on smartphones in new markets for Canonical.
The role will focus specifically on:
Follow up marketing activities on top leads (especially mobile operators) from the phone launch at CES, MWC and through our website. Ensuring all are tracked and recorded accurately in salesforce.com. In cooperation with Inside Sales Team and phone sales lead.
Drafting of marketing plans for the emerging markets (India, China, Africa), Asia, North America and Latin America to raise brand awareness for Ubuntu. This will be done in cooperation with Head of Mobile Marketing, phones sales and product management.
Defining cost effective and replicable campaigns in new markets with the goal of securing new phone partners (mobile operators mainly, but also OEMs).
Supporting role in go-to-market planning (especially joint events) with selected OEM and operator partners. In cooperation with Co-Marketing Manager and Head of Mobile Marketing.
Managing customer communications and regular newsletters through Marketo towards existing and potential operator, OEM, SoCs, developers and other key partners for Ubuntu on smartphones.
Scout and coordinate all industry event participation in new markets, and help execute Canonical activities at selected events.
The Customer Marketing Manager will have strong understanding of the mobile phone markets and how vendors as well as operators segment and market both services and devices to their end users. The person will ideally have more than 8 years of experience in customer and relationship marketing, as well as event marketing in the mobile industry. Knowledge of European markets at large, Asia, USA and Latin America beneficial.
The role will report to the Head of Mobile Marketing and will work day to day with the the devices product management, sales & business development and design teams, as well as the overall communications and marketing team members.

- Experience in working with mobile operators, phone hardware OEMs and software vendors - preferably in Asia region, India and/or China
- Good working knowledge of both salesforce.com and Marketo as critical CRM tools
- Experience in working with cross-functional and geographically dispersed teams
- Fluent in one language in addition to English is a plus
