The Urban League of Essex County (ULEC) is a 94-year-old non-profit organization with a proven track record for responsible community building and development. Our mission is to assist disadvantaged urban residents in the achievement of social and economic self-sufficiency.

Responsible for providing one-on-one foreclosure mitigation counseling services, helping households in foreclosure and at-risk of foreclosure to understand their options, as well as the financial and housing implications of those options. Counselor will work with clients to develop and implement a housing plan to avoid foreclosure and/or mitigate the impacts of foreclosure. Counselor will also help clients to work with their mortgage servicers, helping them through the modification process, if appropriate. This counselor will be responsible for providing foreclosure mitigation counseling services to residents Essex County. Counselor will prepare reports, analyze data and make presentations on behalf of the agency. Counselor will be part of the larger Housing Center team. Other duties as assigned. Reports directly to Director of Programs Management and Strategic Planning

Five years’ experience in mortgage lending, or related field.

Computer literate – Microsoft Word, Excel, other database programs.

Able to work effectively in team environment.

Able to work independently.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Exceptional attention to detail

Excellent oral and writing communication skills.

Good judgment and ability to recognize and triage large volume of clients.

Familiar with Client Management System, Counselor Max

Meets one-on-one with foreclosure and pre-foreclosure clients to (1) determine their current housing needs, and (2) help clients understand their housing options and the implications of those options.

Help clients develop and implement a housing plan to meet their current and future housing needs.

If the client is willing and able to work to save their home, help client to present case to their current mortgage servicer to request a modification, refinance, etc.

Serve as an advocate for clients, working with lenders and services to negotiate a modification, refinance, deed in lieu, etc., as appropriate.

Maintain good communication with clients and lenders during the negotiation process.

Complete both written and oral reports to supervisor and volunteer board of directors, as requested.

Maintain electronic and hard copy client files in accordance with HUD guidelines.

Assure requirements of grant funders are met.

Works as part of the Housing Center team.
