OpenX is looking for a Distinguished Engineer to help carry OpenX to the next level. This integral member of the technology team should be a recognized expert in the field of digital advertising technology and scalable transaction processing platforms. The candidate should be a software engineering expert, technology strategist, and accomplished architect. The DE will be integrally involved in setting product and technology strategy, will be a key contributor to the product and technology road map and, most crucially, will be responsible for the design and quality implementation of software engineering projects in both the planning and implementation phases.
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Distinguished Engineer will be a key member of the technology team and the company senior team and will be expected to maintain a high-profile technical leadership approach while remaining highly accessible and collaborative. The ideal candidate is a proven leader, who has had experience in the advertising technology space and one, who is well known for disciplined execution at scale, firm and fair leadership of large teams and quality strategic thinking regarding both technology and business.

Key responsibilities include:
Create system designs and documentation for development teams.

Hands-on prototyping to validate approaches and establish standards.

Understanding technically difficult technology transitions away from legacy systems to next generation systems, while preserving customer experience and company efficacy.

Anticipating when system re-factoring will be required so OpenX’s technology foundations remain ahead of the curve.

Maintaining/optimizing performance aspects of a complex multi-tier system and drive revenue and cost improvements in this type of non-monolithic technical stack.

Help realize the work of the product teams and build compelling advertising technology products across many teams.

Ensure multi-system and multi-team projects are executed flawlessly without dependencies being missed.

Anticipate technology scale and capability challenges; communicate and then execute clear, proactive plans to address those challenges.

“See beyond the horizon” for critical technical projects.

Lead a growing team of Software Engineers in language and method selection, libraries, platforms, APIs, etc.

Plan extremely clearly, communicating and managing resource allocation against priority projects.

Work closely and interactively with the OpenX product group to turn product requirements in to actionable engineering tasks.

Play a central role in technology strategy: design review, architectural planning, long-range technology choices.

Key Position Skills & Experience:
Technical Expertise

Very high degree of technical expertise, strong systems background with track record of individual technical accomplishments.

Large scale experience in distributed systems and SOA architectures. An ideal candidate would be able to talk through the difficulties in building systems that require 100s of machines per system.

Ability to understand and evaluate various competing technical designs to help choose and in many cases build foundational OpenX components.

Able to establish credibility with smart engineers quickly, and provide longer term technology vision and motivation.

Expert on various software engineering methodologies and able to leverage past experiences applying them.

Execution Expertise:
Proven ability to drive large scale development and launch world class products.

Demonstrated organizational skills in managing large teams building complex projects across different regions.

Closely familiar with large scale advertising transactions.

Proven capability to build trust and communicate effectively with diverse range of engineers as well as executive team members.

Required Qualifications:
Must have at least 12 years experience leading the development of enterprise-class digital advertising products.

Must be able to work in a fast-paced company; work effectively across diverse stakeholders; and be capable of instilling transformational best practices, execution rigor and a culture of innovation within the industry.

BSCS degree minimum

Deep Experience in the Advertising Technology Domain

Preferred Qualifications:
MS/PhD in Computer Science Strongly Preferred

Experience working on mobile platforms

Experience working on big data systems (Hadoop etc.)

Has been published in reputable computer science or electrical engineering journals

The role ideally calls for experience within a SaaS-based, digital advertising technology environment.
