The Medical Assistant provides individualized, direct patient care of patients under the supervision of a physician. The Medical Assistant assists in the implementation of the delivery of health care services, assists fellow employees in providing the highest quality personalized patient care, and maintains a positive work relationship with the health care team. Administers medications only under the direction, supervision and control of the physician.

The ages of patients served spans the spectrum of the life cycle. Care will be directed at taking vital signs, assisting patients to room, and assisting the nurses, physicians, students and residents in the clinical area, recognizing that every age group has unique developmental characteristics influencing the approach that should be utilized in caring for these patients. Qualifications:
Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Indicate minimum required to qualify or perform this job.)

Education/experience/licensing:
1. Graduate from an approved School of Medical Assisting.
2. Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant preferred.
3. Previous Ambulatory Care nursing experience preferred.
4. Possesses knowledge and skills in techniques of good patient care and maintains competency through continuing education.
5. Exhibits accuracy, integrity, and flexibility to work multiple outpatient areas.
6. Motivated to plan and organize work, and to work without supervision.
7. Is tactful and courteous in dealing with patients and visitors. Able to maintain an effective working relationship with personnel and the medical staff.
8. Required to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must be punctual and dependable.
9. Obtains certification in CPR and maintains after employment.
10. Successfully completes clinic specific competencies.
11. Adheres to UTMC customer service & iCare values.
12. Previous Electronic Medical Records experience preferred.
13. Previous ambulatory medicine clinic experience preferred.

Communication and other skills:
Able to document care legibly in hand written text
Able to navigate through the EMR and record required data accurately and efficiently.
Able to communicate and collaborate with team members including but not limited to physicians, nurses, managers, other MAs and other team members

Reporting Relationships:
Reports to the Clinic Manager
May receive work assignment from a lead MA, RN or physician
Collaborates with other team members such as MAs, RNs, LPNs, or physicians.

Working Conditions

1. Must be able to work flexible hours, shifts, holidays and weekends.
2. Tolerate busy office environment that requires constant interaction with patients, employees, students,
residents, and physicians.
3. Requires prolonged walking and standing. Occasional lifting of patients sometimes over 200 pounds.
4. Occasional carrying of items weighing up to 30 pounds required.
5. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range and manual dexterity.
6. Requires the ability to operate various types of office equipment, including but not limited to:
Personal computer, fax machines, copiers, telephones
7. Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment on a daily basis.
8. Must be able to work effectively both with internal and external customers in stressful situations.

Physical Requirements:
1) visual acuity of 20/20 or corrected to 20/20 including color vision when applicable; 2) ability to hear with or without aides); 3) ability to orally communicate; 4) good manual dexterity; 5) ability to push, pull, roll, and transfer/lift 50 pounds occasionally; 6) ability to stand, walk frequently; 7) ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel frequently; and 8) ability to perform CPR (if required for position).

2. Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant preferred.
3. Previous Ambulatory Care nursing experience preferred.
12. Previous Electronic Medical Records experience preferred.
