Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a biology research lab and work with laboratory mice is desired.

  • Minimum one year of experience working with transgenic mouse models.
  • Knowledge of Molecular Genetics.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Must be motivated and have assiduous attention to detail, especially in record keeping.
  • Diligent, efficient, intelligent and highly motivated.

With more than 425 investigators and a research staff in the thousands, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute continues its groundbreaking research on diabetes, neonatal seizures, childhood cancer, hemophilia, pediatric heart disease, cystic fibrosis, nutrition disorders, hypercholesterolemia, mental retardation, AIDS, sickle cell disease and numerous other diseases and disorders that affect children. Among its distinguished investigators are seven members of the Institute of Medicine, two investigators of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Pew Scholars in Biomedical Sciences, and NIH Merit Scholars.

We are seeking a Research Technician II to manage breeding a colony of genetically modified mice within a large transgenic mouse program. This includes mouse husbandry and maintenance of mouse colonies, as well as routine molecular biology laboratory duties. This position interacts with staff and researchers as well as students and faculty members. The research supported by this position will involve the use of the mouse as a model system to study the role of bio-energetic defects and epigenetic alterations. The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a biology research lab and work with laboratory mice is desired.

Duties include setting up breeding pairs, weaning, checking plugs, health checks and phenotypic analysis, taking biopsies, record keeping, and coordinating with the animal facility for proper maintenance of mouse husbandry. Routine Molecular Biology will include extraction of genomic DNA from mouse tissue biopsies, molecular genotyping of transgenic animals by PCR, keeping laboratory records and databases, prepare laboratory stock solutions, ordering reagents, and occasional guidance of student helpers.
