The Enterprise Architect (EA) is a leadership role reporting to the Director of IT and responsible for translating business strategy into IT strategy, IT systems and working closely with senior leaders. The Enterprise Architect develops iterative plans that ensure technology objectives are aligned with business goals. The goal of the Enterprise Architect is to create a framework that smoothly bridges the gaps between business architecture, systems architecture and technical architecture. The Enterprise Architect is responsible for leading the development of the strategy, roadmap, design and implementation of the architecture for clinical, business and research application systems.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Develop a deep understanding of the business model and goals, and then, develop a comprehensive architectural plan by aligning the business goals and the IT that supports the goal.
Work with application groups, various business groups and the various technical areas with a charter to review, assist and oversee in the design of all layers of the architecture, including application, database, systems, infrastructure, statistical analysis, Informatics, storage and network layers
Set up and maintain an Enterprise IT Architecture Governance framework by building out a charter using The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) standards or similar standards.
Chair the Architecture Review Board (ARB) and participate as a member of the Strategic Advisory Board (SAB)
Work with other architects and technical leads within the organization (e.g. for business, clinical and research applications and systems) to lead and drive technical strategy relating back to the business initiatives and goals
Lead in the on-going development of Technical Roadmap(s), new technical architectural and best practice strategies to support business strategies and to achieve business excellence.
Use a structured methodology to evaluate and select architectural alternatives (ASIS, TOBE, FITGAP, etc.) including encompassing all underlying concepts, best practices, hardware, software and tools. Exercise financial analysis using Cost Benefit Analysis, Return on Investment and other financial evaluation techniques
Work with multiple technical staff to develop a strong understanding of all current technologies and of emerging technologies that may be used to support initiatives and goals
Perform gap analysis assessments of developing strategies and existing operations to identify opportunities for alignment and improvement
Assist in financial analysis, business case and justification for initiatives
Assist and evaluate business partners who can provide improved technical solutions and benefits to our enterprise
Maintain the architecture knowledge base and artifacts adhering to all documentation standards; catalog and make architectural documentation available on a secured basis
Adhere to all policies and procedures
The architect will be responsible for providing leadership, guidance and direction to management, staff and business leaders as needed
Rationalize all key architectural decisions for reuse, redundancy, operating and cost effectiveness
Mentor customers, partners and internal staff on the proper use of the architecture
Working with the technical leadership to ensure that all individual project architecture components align with the direction of the Enterprise Architecture
Lead architectural projects according to strategies and plans for projects/platforms, ensuring overall alignment to the IT strategy
Provide input to resource planning, cost estimation, budget development and cost control
Forecast staff needs, coaching, motivating and developing team members
Advanced Degree in an Enterprise Architecture related technical discipline or equivalent experience. Certification preferred, focused on underlying concepts, best practices and tools, i.e., The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
It is expected that the successful candidate will possess other credentials that display the breadth of technical and business acumen required for this role.
Minimum 10 years' professional experience in the IT industry
Minimum 5 years' leadership experience in leading cross functional teams
Minimum 5 years’ experience leading IT development, IT projects or technical architecture
Minimum 5 years' practical experience in a business focused IT role
Experience as an architect in a clinical, pharmaceutical, life sciences or other healthcare industries preferred
Strong demonstrated knowledge of technologies including network, server, desktop, storage, application architecture, as well as clinical applications
Proven ability in developing business cases and financial cases associated with IT projects
Working knowledge of EA frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman, etc.)
Demonstrate professional experience in preparing and presenting information effectively, clearly and concisely, in written and spoken form to a wide-range of internal and external constituencies, including non-technical executives, officers, product or service vendors, and middle-managers
Successful completion of at least 3 enterprise architectural projects (Will need to present examples of work experience)
Strong knowledge of system design tools methodologies SDLC/Waterfall, Agile, Testing, UML, application development, web development, data modeling and design, OLAP, etc.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, written, communication and presentation skills
Mastery of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project software
Proven ability to work at both a macro and micro view
Strong understanding of medical, life sciences or pharma IT preferred
Is a systems thinker. Approaches problem solving from a wide angle view and is effective at gathering wide ranges of input but crystallizing common requirements and needs
Is viewed as a true technologist. Maintains the ability to personally demonstrate core technology skills at a level necessary to effectively lead the organization
This is a 3 month contract-to-hire position with one of our clients in the Durham, NC area. Contract rate in the $65 - 75/hr. range; up to $120,000 upon conversion. No sponsorship or 3rd-party arrangements available.
