The Continuous Improvement Specialist serves as an agent of change – driving operations performance toward break-through improvements.
The entry qualifications for the Continuous Improvement Specialist include: BS in IE with exposure in lean manufacturing or related field Additional experience in Lean Manufacturing / Process Improvement and Design is desired. Minimum 5-10 years of experience with progressive career path and operational experience in Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering and/or Project Management. Experience in transactional business environments is also desired. Shop floor experience in heavy machine; assembly-test manufacturing environment is also desired. Demonstrated leadership with the ability to gain support of other managers and staff to implement change without direct supervisory control. Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff. Must have demonstrated performance as a change agent with leadership and project management skills. Strong presentation and communication skills at all organizational levels Proficiency with various software applications (i.e., Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, Visio, etc.) Proficiency with Minitab statistical software or similar. The Continuous Improvement Specialist facilitates communications, problem resolution and provides appropriate feedback. This position will work across all functional areas, including Quality, Finance, Operations, Project Management, Engineering, Marketing/Sales, and Service. The Continuous Improvement Specialist creates and nurtures an environment where people feel comfortable sharing ideas and encourages teamwork to improve operations, processes and customer satisfaction. This position may also have customer interaction in identifying and developing Critical to Quality, Delivery, or Performance aspects. The Continuous Improvement Specialist aligns with business leaders and conducts multiple high-impact Six Sigma projects across functional departments with minimum supervision. He or she is expected to make positive and active contributions, utilizing independent thinking to develop strategies and objectives to assist the organization in achieving its key financial and growth goals. This position requires the ability to identify processes/ procedures needed and required improvements to eliminate negative impacts. A high degree of creativity is needed to challenge and effectively change current practices and ways of thinking about the operation. Solid judgment and resourcefulness is needed to effectively deal with multiple, highly variable factors and the interplay of complex considerations, and this person must be innovative and decisive.The Continuous Improvement Specialist will: Work within the management team to scope projects for aligned with business metrics. Identifies process CTQs, establish process baseline capabilities, DPU, DPMO, etc. Conducts benchmark studies as needed to establish goals. Lead and facilitate high impact Six Sigma projects using DMAIC methodology. Ensures that a well-defined implementation plan with timetables, responsibilities, milestones, and deliverables is developed and communicated. Train, execute, and mentor Measure & Analyze Phase tools such as, SIPOC (process mapping techniques), Control Charts, Cause & Effect diagrams and matrixes, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, and other appropriate tools. Evaluate Measurement System using Gage R & R Studies and implement improvement as required. Efficiently conduct Design of Experiments for screening and optimizing critical factors. Efficiently implement Control plans for appropriate critical factors and institutionalize with most effective application of available resources to ensure the gains are sustained. Select and apply appropriate Control charts where needed. Train personnel on Common Cause versus Special Cause Variation. Assist in site training programs for Six Sigma and Lean concepts. Responsible for mentoring multiple Green Belts and team members across multiple functional departments with the organization Communicate Quality Improvement System priorities for assigned area, current projects, results to date and recognition for top performers on a regular basis. Present project findings to management teams in a concise format. Develops and leverages best processes and practices across the unit. Also provide appropriate summary reports for future training examples, etc. documented in Lessons Learned database. Monitor multiple improvement projects and facilitates and trains group as necessary to keep on track and on time. Work closely with Finance to identify and track project benefits. Organize, schedule and manage Kaizen (meaning change for better in Japanese) events to energize employees to attain breakthrough improvements such as increased productivity, and reduced non-value added activities, waste, set-up time and WIP (work in process inventory), reduced lead time. Other examples of breakthrough improvement would include the identification of the processes that affect quality defects and their recurrence as well as safety and ergonomic issues. Work with IT and other functional areas to develop and implement best practices' for quality, service reliability, information integrity, etc. Encourages the automation of processes, streamlining information flow and consolidating knowledge within the company and with its suppliers and customers.This job description is a general description of essential job functions.
