The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Director of Development to join our Major Gifts team, the Director of Development will devise and implement fundraising strategies to meet annual and long-range goals among major and amid-level donors, prospects and planned giving donors and prospects. The position will involve developing moves management strategies to deepen relationships with individual donors and prospects for major and planned gifts. In-person solicitations and direct donor engagement will be a key function of this position.

In this role, the Director of Development will:

  • Direct and manage interactions with major and planned gift prospects and review gift request materials and family foundation grant requests.
  • Oversee Development Managers
  • Develop strategies with Vice President of Development and Director of Direct Response to meet individual major giving fundraising goals from identified high-capacity annual major donors and prospects.
  • Personally manage relationships with 100 to 150 individual donors ($5,000+/yr donors)
  • Track relationship management process for major, annual and planned gift donors to include identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Lead and guide the development of integrated fundraising strategies for major gifts prospects and high-value direct response donors
  • Utilize the results of a recently completed database wealth screening to develop donor strategies and regularly refreshed prospect portfolio assignments
  • Build integrated fundraising engagement plans for high-capacity annual fund donors that are rooted in sound fundraising best practices and donors’ interests in Feeding America
  • Work collaboratively with a limited number of Feeding America network members to develop joint major gift requests
  • Develop fundraising materials, such as briefing materials, request letters, proposals and personalized gift request materials for key solicitations
  • Write thank-you letters and acknowledgements for major gift donors
  • Understand the fundamentals of planned giving vehicles and assist in the continued development of Feeding America’s planned giving program, including integrating planned gift requests into annual gifts and major gifts requests, when appropriate
  • Work collaboratively to ensure consistency in messaging and coordination of fundraising asks among major gifts and direct response
  • Collaborate with Philanthropy Operations team to ensure proper tracking, reporting, and research
  • Oversee implementation of comprehensive individual major gift stewardship plans for annual and planned giving donors
  • Oversee the execution of annual and planned giving societies and recognition programs


  • The successful candidate will demonstrate the following education, skills and experiences:
    • Commitment to philanthropic values and service
    • Deep experience in philanthropy, fundraising or direct donor management
    • Strong knowledge of fundraising best practices and major, annual and planned giving programs
    • Experience in developing donor strategies, briefing and request materials, solicitation approaches and donor stewardship for major donors and prospects
    • Understanding of annual fund and direct response best practices, procedures and methods
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff, volunteers, donors, and prospective donors
    • Superior written and oral communication skills
    • Strong knowledge of fundraising software (BBEC) preferred
    • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products
    • Previous management experienced required
