The House Supervisor builds on the essential functions of the Registered Nurse. The House Supervisor utilizes an interpersonal process that focuses on the total individual and his/her role in the family, culture, and society. The House Supervisor is supportive of health, life, and the quality of life through care, counseling, and curative measures. The House Supervisor fulfills multiple roles such as patient advocacy, management, oversight and coordination of resources. The House Supervisor is guided by the substantial specialized knowledge of nursing based on the physiological and psychosocial sciences as well as skills in management and implementation of patient care at St. James Healthcare. Integrates the goals and objectives of the organization into the delivery of care.
The incumbent routinely interacts with patients/clientele in the following age/development categories: Newborn(under 1 month), Infant(1 month- 1 year), Toddler(1-2), Preschooler(3-5),
School Age(6-10), Adolescent(11-18), Young Adult(18-36), Middle Adult(37-64), Geriatric(65 and above).
Assists Nursing Directors in administration of patient care and services in hospital to maintain standards of nursing care and practice, and advises medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing service.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT Participates in committees or task forces associated with the healthcare delivery at St. James Collaborates with other departments or disciplines and recommends methods or systems for improving quality and reducing costs. Utilizes interdisciplinary planning process to plan and implement change. Participates in work re-design projects as assigned. Assists and participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of departmental Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement activities. Assists and participates in developing standards of performance in cooperation with other Directors and Vice President of Patient Care Services. Identifies problems, proposes solutions, and reviews the findings of monitoring and evaluation activities utilizing the interactive planning process with service area personnel. Obtains feedback from customers regarding their perceptions of the service provided to them and then utilizes this information to improve service delivery. Identifies risks, promptly investigates problems and complaints, and takes action as appropriate to improve service. Assists in proper preparation, maintenance, confidentiality, and timely submission of reports to Nursing Directors or Vice President Patient Care Services as required. Ensures that standards which meet The Joint Commission and other accrediting organization requirements are maintained and documented.
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Upholds, provides for and models standards of professional clinical practice with the ability to demonstrate clinical standards of care and practice. Supports, provides, clarifies, and ensures adherence to Hospital policies. Delegates effectively, within scope of authority. Assists in evaluation of personnel in a timely, fair, and objective manner according to established performance criteria. Assists in providing educational opportunities in relevant subjects to the Nursing Departments. Recommends personnel for hire, transfer, promotion, or special training to ensure the most effective utilization of individual skills and employee development. Implements methods to enhance productivity and effectively control and reduce overtime and utilize hospital personnel. Assists in recruiting and maintaining qualified staff. Makes recommendations regarding general staffing pattern necessary to meet all service area needs. Knowledgeable of the key requirements for each position in department; holds staff accountable for their responsibilities inherent in their positions at all times. Demonstrates ability to measure individual employee performance against established criteria based performance standards; and utilizes evaluations as objective management tools for coaching and development of staff. Provides consistent information and feedback to staff related to job performance, expectations. Ensures that staff function within legal boundaries and guidelines established by Hospital policies and procedures and scope of practice for nurse Practice Act where applicable. Communicates objectives, and policies through participation in surveys, meetings and staff conferences. Combines ethical judgment with technical skills within the policy and legal guidelines of the institution; understands the legal, social, economic and political forces which influence the health care system. Appropriately refer employee grievances in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures. Participates in meetings that are held as needed in order to recognize achievement or identify problems, propose solutions, and review the findings of monitoring and evaluation activities. Assists in the formulation, implementation, and annual review of policies, procedures, protocols a nd operating standards. Ensures that strict confidentiality guidelines are adhered to by all staff members, both intra-, and inter-departmentally; takes immediate disciplinary actions with regard to any confidentiality violations. Assists in adhering to safety, fire and disaster programs to ensure the proper handling and safe care of patients, personnel, and visitors involved in accidents or during disaster type emergencies. Provides a safe working environment for staff members; promptly reports any accidents; implements corrective and preventive actions. Recommends establishment or revision of policies and develops organizational structure and standards of performance.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's of Nursing Degree from four-year college or university(in progress or achieved) preferred; minimum 3 years acute hospital RN experience required, diverse clinical experience and background desirable; demonstrated managerial experience and professional practice
required. Continued education in management and nursing practice demonstrated.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current Montana RN License
PALS or ENPC certification required or to be achieved within 6 months.
Specialty certification preferred.
