The Staff Psychiatrist is clinically responsible to the Chief Medical Officer of the Mental Health Outreach Program.
He/She promotes quality patient care as a clinical expert in Psychiatry; works as mentor, preceptor, consultant, and researcher; works collaboratively with other health care professionals to accomplish patient, service and hospital goals.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides follow-up when indicated.
- Uses assessment skills to promptly examine new patients thoroughly using appropriate clinical, laboratory and other pertinent data.
Answers Mental Health inpatient consult requests when necessary.
Formulates assessment and plan according to accepted protocols, treatment plans or attending physicians treatment protocols, treatment plans or recommendations.
- Accurately interprets and evaluates clinical data for the purpose of determining diagnosis and clinical status.
Corrects diagnosis when necessary.
Recognizes changes in behavior, symptoms, signs, and other pertinent facts about the patient and has the ability to modify plan of treatment when indicated.
- Initiates appropriate and timely treatment.
Prescribes medications according to outpatient formulary.
Recognizes own capabilities and limitations.
Provides direct, short-term, crisis intervention, grief work and brief psychotherapy.
Counsels patients on smoking, alcohol and/or other substance cessation.
Administers or orders appropriate immunizations.
Effectiveness in Emergencies
- Acts quickly in recognizing emergency situations, and takes timely necessary action.
Calls codes when indicated and manages CPR efforts until code team arrives.
Acts as a consultant in involving patients in the treatment and management plan.
- Maintains confidentiality of patients and relatives through competence and interpersonal skills.
Works collaboratively with other professionals to evaluate, treat, or arrange disposition for veterans with Mental Health issues identified in Primary Care settings.
Refers patients to other services of subspecialty clinics such as nutritional counseling as appropriate.
Authorizes special transportation as needed for patients follow-up appointments as indicated.
Records data from clinic visit, including chief complaints, active problems, medications, physical findings and results of diagnostic tests
. Promptly and completely reports physical examinations and changes in patient status.
Maintains clear, accurate, and current clinical records.
Completes medical records per hospital regulations.
Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Approved schools are:
Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.
Licensure and Registration
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.
First-Year Residency (Internship).
Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidates acceptability for residency training.
Approved residencies are:
Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
English Language Proficiency.
Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
