The Faculty/Coordinator, Fire and Rescue primary responsibilities include designing and implementing learning strategies for students in the Fire and Rescue Programs including curriculum (credit) and continuing education (non-credit), developing course syllabi and instructional materials; maintaining instructional records; student recruitment, advisement and retention; developing and evaluating courses, programs and services; participating in College activities and committees; and other duties which support the mission and initiatives of the College. The position includes practical instruction, and instruction in the traditional and online learning environments. The Fire and Rescue program use face to face, online, classroom, and practical learning experiences as an instructional strategy. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean, School of Health, Wellness, and Public Safety.
Responsibilities:
Promotes College mission, values, and vision
Teaches assigned courses on the main campus, satellite locations, and at other settings to meet program needs including, but not limited to, day, evening, weekend, and online courses
Evaluates student progress and provides appropriate feedback
Develops course syllabi and provides appropriate written information to students concerning course evaluation and criteria
Develops, organizes, and administers continuing education (non-credit) courses to provide educational opportunities
Advises students in academic and employment planning
Recommends appropriate textbooks and other instructional materials
Carries out a program of self evaluation to determine instructional effectiveness
Explores, assesses, and implements appropriate instructional technology to enhance student learning outcomes
Participates in activities necessary to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies as required
Assists in the evaluation of courses and programs
Prepares and submits instructional records, reports, and grades established by institutional policy
Attends College meetings
Assumes role of Fire School Director as required by Department of Insurance and Office of State Fire Marshall
Assists in student recruitment and retention, including College-wide marketing initiative
Assists in the development of institutional policies and regulations
Assists with administrative responsibilities for various grants or projects in the School
Maintains contacts with business, industry, and professional organizations including Fire Association meetings for both Davidson and Davie Counties for the purpose of keeping instructional programs current with advances in occupational or academic field
Partners with business, industry, civic, governmental, and other organizations to promote the College and to serve the customized education/training needs of the College community
Assists in curriculum development and revision, including distance courses where appropriate
Maintains appropriate office hours and accessibility for students, faculty and staff
Assists in maintaining appropriate Library materials for instructional area
Assists in management of resources such as equipment and budget
Assists in the development of course schedules
Assists in orientation and mentoring of new faculty peers
Interviews, hires and evaluates Fire and Rescue continuing education faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures
Serves as an advisor or sponsor of student clubs or organizations where appropriate
Participates in College and School level planning and development
Assists in the advisory committee process
Assists in the development of promotional materials to publicize and market programs
Participates in professional development to enhance instructional and technical skills
Maintains professional credentials as needed per state regulations and requirements
Performs other tasks as assigned which support the mission and initiatives of the College
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Fire Science/Technology or related field (Associate’s degree with substantial related work experience and a commitment to obtaining a Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree requirement)
Fire Fighter I and II Certification
Fire Instructor Level II
Minimum of three years of full-time employment in the Fire Science/Technology field
Skill in the use of computers and commitment to using technology
Experience with MS Office 2007
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively and collegially with others
Ability to provide leadership in anticipating and responding to change
Willingness to work a flexible schedule including day, evening, and weekend hours at multiple sites
Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission of a comprehensive community college

Qualifications Preferred:
Prior college teaching experience, especially in an Associate’s degree Fire Science/Technology program
Master’s degree in Fire Science/Technology or related field with an emphasis in education
Hazardous Materials Technician
Rescue Technician
Experience in the instructional use of computers and non-traditional teaching methods
ADA Summary:
ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment in the collection, evaluation and analysis of data and student assessment, curriculum development, and program review; ease of mobility in supervising students in the practical and classroom settings, assisting with rescues, working in confined spaces, working in extreme temperature conditions, ability to wear full personal protective equipment including self contained breathing apparatus, carrying equipment, supplies and other instructional materials; travel between campus and clinical locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication (oral, written, auditory, visual), including use of computers.
