Purpose and Contents of the Role:

The internship/coop role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment, and to support/promote the graduate's career goals through contact with professionals in their field of study. The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for Volvo Group Truck Technologies - Powertrain Engineering (GTT-PE) by working on important and innovative projects. Internships are structured learning experiences where interns/coops and our full time professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo Group Truck Technologies - Powertrain Engineering (GTT-PE)

Responsibilities / Main tasks:
  • The Controls sub-system of Volvo Group Truck Technologies - Powertrain Engineering North America, located in Hagerstown, MD, is looking to expand its Hardware Engineering resources
  • We are looking for a resource that will work closely with the HAG and global GTT-PE engineering team to work on the application of existing sensors and maintenance of sensors on production engines
  • The ideal candidate will be an engineer with at least 2 years experience toward an engineering degree. The candidate should understand sensor applications and be familiar with how the sensors are being used in the overall control strategy. The candidate should also have experience with software development and an appreciation for driving software commonality
  • The successful candidate must also realize the importance of customer, production, and quality requirements within product development. Overall, the person will be a global team player


This position will support the Control Systems Hardware Team efforts in US based heavy duty diesel projects. Specific responsibilities for the resource are:
  • Support application of existing sensors on new engine platforms
  • Analyzing warranty returns (ECU’s, sensors, starters and wire harnesses) and performing a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigation
  • Prepare written reports or presentations on completed work
  • Use of internal GTT-PE reliability engineering tool to proactively identify potential field issues
  • Support engineering activities of senior engineers
  • Coordination of activities with other departments within the company
  • Understand and execute GTT-PE Control Systems Engineering processes

Essential Skills and Required Experience:
  • Entering Sophomore year class standing or higher
  • History of academic achievement: GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred

IT Applications:
  • Microsoft Office (experience with Excel Macros is a plus) and a willingness to learn new software
