Under direct supervision, performs a variety of pre & post analytic duties to support the laboratory w/ the receipt, processing, distribution, testing & resulting of specimens to a variety of departments to include Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology & Histology

Essential Functions:
  • Receives, tracks, unloads, sorts & delivers specimens to appropriate department for testing
  • Stores specimens at the appropriate temperatures & ensures that specimens are discarded according to laboratory procedures
  • Checks specimen integrity, & processes specimens to include, labeling, centrifugation, aliquoting, racking, creating work-lists & loading instruments
  • Performs maintenance on equipment & responsible for equipment start up & shut down
  • Stocks laboratory supplies & prepares reagents as appropriate
  • Packages reagents & controls & sends to other laboratories as needed
  • Prepares specimens for special testing (RMA, LDL's, etc)
  • Investigates, troubleshoots & resolves pending logs
  • Communicates results (including critical values) to clinical staff & documents communication in laboratory information system
  • Performs front end processing of all occult blood specimens
  • Creates batch lists & packages specimens, to be sent to other laboratories
  • Orders & processes add-ons daily
  • Pulls STD paperwork & sends to appropriate provider
  • Provides the state w/ necessary information
  • Fills out pathology review paperwork, clover slips specimens & delivers to pathology
  • Matches paperwork & slides for laboratory techs
  • Prints & submits Quality Assurance reports to technologists
  • Performs other duties as assigned to include plating specimens, pulling blood cultures, generating reports, staining, & other specimen testing as required
  • In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors & principles defined by the KP Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives
  • Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, & behaviors necessary to provide superior & culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, & to purchasers, contracted providers & vendors
  • Supports compliance & Kaiser Permanent's Code of Conduct by adhering to federal & state laws & regulations, accreditation & license requirements, by policies & procedures
  • Responds appropriately to observed fraud & abuse

Basic Qualifications:
  • 1 year of previous experience in a medical laboratory or closely related environment
  • HS graduation or equivalent
  • Completion of a recognized medical training program or equivalent including, but not limited to phlebotomy or medical assistant programs
  • An additional 6 months of coursework or direct medical laboratory experience may be substituted for a formal training program
  • Must have knowledge of general medical laboratory processes, medical terminology, reporting of test results, & the ability to communicate clearly & accurately w/ medical providers & staff regarding test procedures & results
  • Proficient in high-volume, detail oriented tasks & demonstrated ability to accurately perform multiple tasks within a limited timeframe
  • Experience in operating computer terminals, printers, & multi-line phone system & fax machines
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends & holidays
