The company began in 1980 when boyhood pals and high school coaches Art Juedes and Rick Gering set out to find professional-quality shoes for their athletes and ended up in business for themselves. In 1983 the first four-color catalog was created featuring track & field shoes, basketball shoes, football cleats, and baseball cleats. In 1995 Eastbay went public and opened on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Two years later, shareholders sold the company to retail giant Woolworth. Woolworth underwent revision in November 2001, changing its name to Foot Locker, Inc., a reflection of its global commitment to the athletic shoes and apparel business.
Today, Eastbay is a leading world supplier of athletic shoes, clothing and sports equipment. Foot Locker, Inc. is the world's leading retailer of athletically inspired shoes and apparel. Headquartered in New York City, it operates approximately 3,500 athletic retail stores in 21 countries in North America, Europe and Australia under the brand names Foot Locker, Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Footaction, Champs Sports and CCS.
