Band A Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with database installation, configuration, documenting, maintaining and optimization.
  • Monitor database vendor forums and track database software versions, patch and security patch announcements and install, test, document and coordinate promotions to production as directed.
  • Assist with developing, testing, documenting, implementing and enhancing backup and recovery procedures, including schedule coordination with job scheduling staff and system administrators as required.
  • Implement and maintain standards and practices that ensure the security, integrity and manageability of databases, including disaster recovery as directed.
  • Assist with capacity expansion as required by the development and deployment of new applications.
  • Monitor production databases and recommend and assist with tuning activities to help sustain and improve performance and efficiency.
  • Regularly monitor relevant e-mail lists to stay informed of related problems and issues as they appear and are announced in these forums. Pass on technical comments and suggestions that may be beneficial to colleagues.
  • Assist with technical problem diagnostics and problem resolution with the assistance of system administrator, developer, and vendor technical support as necessary.
  • Assist with managing database security and user access.
  • Perform database administration duties related to application change management: assist developers with deploying schemas and promoting changes to production.
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned applications administration activities with application managers in order to minimize or eliminate impact on business processes.
  • Keep abreast of latest developments and techniques by perusing technical journals and periodicals.
  • Keep abreast of trends in database applications development and change-management practices and tools.
  • Investigate techniques and strategies utilized by other installations, especially higher education institutions, by participating in various professional organizations, forums and lists.

  • Band A Minimum Qualifications
  • As typically acquired/evidenced by pertinent baccalaureate educational degree and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for database administration; possession of the following competencies in technical knowledge, critical thinking skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills:
  • Functional knowledge of database administration demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply principles, concepts, methodology and terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of technology, systems, hardware and software associated with database administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve routine problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of system or database backup and recovery procedures.
  • Working knowledge of SQL.
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language, such as C or Java.
  • Technical knowledge of applications change management processes.
  • Able to work outside normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend and/or holiday hours, as directed or required.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledges, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Band B Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for database administration, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawai'i broadband system; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Considerable working knowledge of database administration as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodology.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with database administration.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the design and deployment of mission critical Oracle/MySQL applications and databases.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the design and implementation of backup procedures for Oracle/MySQL applications and databases for organizations requiring high availability.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the design and implementation of expedient disaster recovery procedures for Oracle/MySQL applications and databases.
  • Considerable working knowledge and demonstrated ability to analyze and tune Oracle/MySQL applications for improved performance, including experience using related available and custom developed tools.
  • Considerable working knowledge and demonstrated ability to analyze SQL and PL/SQL code for efficient data retrieval in a complex schema.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluation, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the principles and practices of project management as well as project team management and participation.
  • Able to work outside normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend and/or holiday hours, as directed or required.

  • Experience with supporting Ellucian’s Banner solutions: Student, Financial Aid, Accounts Receivable and Operational Data Store.
  • Experience with supporting KFS (Kuali Financial System) and KC (Kuali Coeus).
  • Experience with supporting Sakai online learning.
  • Experience with Solaris, Redhat Linux, Windows Server 2008, and VMWare.
  • Experience with supporting AssetWorks AiM eFacilities.
  • Experience with supporting PeopleSoft HRMS.
  • Experience with supporting Cognos Business Intelligence, eThority, JasperReports, and Pentaho BI Server.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated ability to develop logical data models for complex applications.
