Simpson College, a private, nationally recognized regional college, grounded in the liberal arts tradition and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, invites nominations and applications for a tenure track position in physical chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in September 2013. A PhD in Physical Chemistry or closely related area is required.
The candidate will be expected to teach the physical chemistry sequence with labs and discussion sections, direct students in research, and provide opportunities for students to present their research at conferences. Candidates with a sub-specialty in nanoscience, biophysical chemistry, material science, or other areas are especially encouraged to apply. In addition candidates are expected to advise students, to serve the department by actively recruiting students to the college and majors to the department, work with department members on curriculum development, participate in the life of the faculty by serving on committees and developing curriculum, and to work with faculty across the campus on all college issues. The department is also responsible for developing a general introductory course for incoming freshmen in which the candidate is expected to participate. The candidate will be expected to develop a modest student research program in an environment of limited resources.
The standard teaching load is six courses per year (two labs = one course). Normally the candidate will be assigned to teach a year-long two semester physical chemistry course with labs every other year, teach lecture and labs for the general chemistry sequence, along with an advanced courses in their area every other year. Other course assignments may occasionally include a course in our three-week May Term, a Simpson Colloquium course for freshmen, or (voluntarily) a travel abroad semester or May Term.
Our program offers majors in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Forensic Science with about 30-40 majors total. Many of the department’s graduates go on for PhD degrees. Recently we have graduates studying at U of Minnesota, Washington University, Yale University, University of Nebraska, University of Michigan, Loyola University (Chicago),Rush Medical School, University of Iowa and Iowa State University. This past summer three graduates received their PhD degrees and two are involved in Post Doc programs at the University of Illinois and MIT.
Applications should include a cover letter describing their interest and qualifications for the position, a current curriculum vita, and at least two letters of recommendation from those who can comment on their potential as a teacher. It would be helpful to include in the cover letter, or in a separate document, their approach to teaching physical chemistry at a liberal arts college.
Review of applications for the position will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Application materials may be sent electronically to Dr. Ron Warnet, Professor of Chemistry at firstname.lastname@example.org, or mailed to: Chemistry Search, c/Ron Warnet, Department of Chemistry, Simpson College, 701 North C St., Indianola, Iowa 50125.
