The Billing/Collections Clerk is responsible for submitting accurate (clean) claims, following up with insurance companies, collecting money due, and managing patient accounts. Responsible for reviewing claim data to ensure accuracy and completion. Works with other departments to resolve errors or obstacles to producing accurate and complete claims in a timely manner, utilizing knowledge of internal work process, regulatory requirements, and payors’ contractual requirements. Prepares and submits accurate (clean) claims to insurance payers either electronically or on paper. Reviews and files notices of payments, denials, and/or adjustments. Generates corrections, appeals, and other follow-up required to collect payment. Provides documentation related to billing and payment as requested by internal customers, clients, insurance companies, and other parties. Performs various collection actions including contacting payers by phone, reviewing unpaid claims electronically, and correcting and resubmitting claims to third-party payers. Responsible for assisting the Patient Accounts Manager with the recovery of outstanding receivables from the specific payers for whom the Billing/Collections Clerk is accountable.
High school diploma or GED. One year general office experience and 3-6 months homecare, hospice, or other health care industry experience required. Medicare/Medicaid claims experience preferred. Intermediate computer skills, especially in Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet software. Advanced skills preferred. Ability to perform basic mathematical and statistical calculations. Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing.
