The International Monetary Fund-an international organization with a diverse staff, men and women drawn from over 160 countries-has an opening for the position of Director of its Statistics Department.
The Department's mission is to provide strong leadership for the development and application of sound statistical practices in the Fund, member countries, and the international statistical community at large. The Department develops internationally-accepted statistical methodologies and standards, including Data Dissemination Standards; provides technical assistance and training to promote the adoption of these standards; and provides statistical services both inside the Fund and outside through its statistical publications, notably the IMF's flagship International Financial Statistics. Its work focuses on macroeconomic statistics, namely monetary and financial statistics, balance of payments, government finance statistics, national accounts, and prices.
The Director works under the overall guidance of the Managing Director and in close collaboration with other members of the Fund's management team and is responsible for providing strong intellectual leadership and strategic vision in planning, managing, and supervising the work of the approximately 165 staff members of the Department. The Director will also be responsible for further developing the IMF's strategy for the role of data in support of its activities and for the IMF's relations with other international organizations working in the field of statistics.
Applicants should have at least 15-20 years of relevant technical and managerial experience. The successful candidate should have experience in supervising the work of others and have a demonstrated track record in strategic thinking, staff management, planning, organizing and delegating work across diverse activities. A strong capacity to promote change and foster close and effective cooperation with the Executive Board, management, departments, and staff is essential. Knowledge of the formal aspects of statistics in one or more of the fields mentioned above would be highly desirable, as would experience in managing the production and dissemination of macroeconomic statistics. Stature in the international statistical community is required. Strong interpersonal, negotiating, and influencing skills and the ability to manage and effectively resolve a variety of HR issues are required. An excellent command of English and strong communication skills are required; a working knowledge of other languages is desirable.
