Civil Engineering Intern - Salem

The College Internship Program is designed to allow students matriculating through an accredited post-secondary program the opportunity to gain practical experience.
There is one position available in ODOT's Salem office for a Civil Engineering Intern. The positions is anticipated to start in May of 2011, last for 16 weeks with the candidate working 40 hours per week.

We are accepting applications from students in accredited degree programs that have completed at least their freshman year in an Associate or Bachelor degree program as well as students enrolled in graduate school. We are also considering recent graduates that have completed their Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree in December 2010 or later for consideration.
This position is classified at the Engineering Specialist 1 level (students that have completed sophomore year), however, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications of the Engineering Specialist - Entry level (students that have completed the freshman year) to apply as well. You must clearly show in your application that you meet the minimum qualifications by providing detailed information regarding your previous work and/or education experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will assist ODOT Region 2 Tech. Center, Roadway designers with 1) research and development of highway corridor design speeds and 2) development of highway improvement projects.

This involves the following:
  • Research all Region 2 highway corridors, to help in determining design speeds for development of ODOT highway improvement projects. This includes researching of highway as-builts, and field review of highway corridors.
  • Enter data into office computer, run queries and generate computer reports.
  • With the aid of a Senior Roadway Designer, layout and develop construction plans for ODOT preservation project.
Qualifications & Desired Attributes:

  • an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology from a community college or technical school;

  • eighteen months of experience directly related to engineering;

  • an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • possess a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. Your driving record is considered unacceptable for any of the following traffic offenses in the last 36 months. Offenses include but are not limited to:
Misdemeanor or felony traffic offense in the last 36 months. Includes reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and others; or Felony revocation of driving privileges or felony or misdemeanor driver license suspension with the last 36 months; or More than 3 Class B traffic violations in the last 12 months; or Class A moving violation in the last 12 months.

Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following profile:

Student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution in a program related to the scope of work performed at ODOT as listed in the position descriptions*; AND Have completed at least the sophomore year by June 2011; AND Have a current grade point average of 2.50 or above; AND Ability to use personal computing equipment and a familiarity with Microsoft Office software products and Auto Cad or Microstation design software.
  • This includes applicants that have completed an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree program in December 2010 or later.
The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at an Engineering Specialist (ES) 1 level (students that have completed their sophomore year). However, we encourage candidates who meet minimum qualifications for an Engineering Specialist-Entry level (students that have completed their freshman year) to apply, as we may consider under-filling the position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for an ES 1. Completion of the freshman year is defined as applicants with less than 96 quarter hours/64 semester hours, but more than 48 quarter hours/32 semester hours. The pay rate for ES-Entry will begin at step 6 of the range which is $13.26 per hour. Preferred Majors:

This position is best suited for individuals pursuing or have completed a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying Technology, and that have (at a minimum) completed their freshman year in college.

Working Conditions:
This position requires frequent travel, including working in remote locations. This position also involves working in an office environment using personal computing equipment and various computer software. Requires maintaining a valid drivers license and driving motor vehicles, often long distances, to project sites to perform work. Field work requires exposure to adverse and diverse site and weather conditions in Oregon. Required to participate in Teams, be an active member, buy-in and support decisions made by the Team.

Frequency: Field Work – 60%; Office Work – 40%
