The County of Sonoma's Transportation and Public Works Department is seeking an enthusiastic and capable individual to join their team as an Airport Operations Specialist Trainee. This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career with the County of Sonoma.
Under supervision, the Airport Operations Specialist Trainee learns to perform a wide variety of operations, maintenance, and security activities at the airport facilities including grounds and equipment maintenance; enforces airport rules and regulations; learns to respond to emergencies and direct fire and rescue operations; patrols and inspects airport facilities when assigned; and performs related work as required.
This position requires availability for all work schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
The Trainee is the entry-level position in the Airport Operations Specialist series and is limited to a maximum of twelve (12) months. The Trainee must successfully complete all required training and certifications within the twelve-month period. Upon successful completion of the Airport Operations Specialist Trainee position, the individual selected is expected to meet the minimum qualifications for Airport Operations Specialist and be able to promote into that position. However, failure to satisfactorily meet the training and certification requirements will result in termination of employment.

The Transportation and Public Works Department is committed to providing quality transportation and public works services within Sonoma County in a responsive and professional manner. Transportation and Public Works is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport, including airfield facilities for airline passenger services as well as corporate, recreational, law enforcement, emergency medical transport, and fire fighting aircraft.
The Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport is a commercial service airport with facilities for airline passenger service, business, and recreational aircraft, plus law enforcement, emergency medical service, and fire fighting aircraft.
Education/Experience: Any combination of experience, training, and education that would provide the opportunity to acquire the required knowledge and abilities. Normally, two years of recent, full-time paid experience in exterior and interior building maintenance, semi-skilled building construction, repair, maintenance or grounds keeping work that included the use of trucks, light mechanical machines and hand tools would provide this opportunity. The ability to read and write English and perform basic arithmetic calculations is required at a level sufficient to perform the duties of the position. Experience, which involved the operation, maintenance, or security of an airport facility, is desirable.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Certifications: Within 12 months of employment, incumbents must complete Airport Specific Training, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Training, Emergency First Aide Training including CPR, Defibrillator Training, First Responder/First Aide, and Live Fire Training.
Additional Requirements: Incumbents may be required to undergo additional FAA Background and/or Criminal History Checks as determined by County, State and Federal Regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: building maintenance and custodial methods, materials and equipment; practical gardening and grounds keeping methods and equipment; safe and correct operation and preventive maintenance of light duty tractors and accessories, boom lift, sweeper, paint sprayer, machines and power tools utilized at the Airport.
Some knowledge of: safety principles and practices employed in the operation of an airport facility; fire prevention and fire fighting techniques is desirable.
Ability to: respond to emergencies; perform heavy physical labor routinely, and under stressful conditions in critical life and death situations; work harmoniously with fellow employees and to deal courteously with the public; exercise independent judgment; follow oral and written directions.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:
An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass), and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
- Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
A background investigation is required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation.
