Position Summary

The Arizona AIDS Education and Training Center is collaborating with the University of Arizona Medical Center Emergency Department to implement a quality improvement program that will increase HIV screening per the U.S. Prevention Services Task Force and CDC recommendations. The Research Nurse, Senior will lead the planning and implementation of an HIV screening program in the University of Arizona Medical Center Emergency Department. The quality improvement project will create an integrated and sustainable HIV screening program in the emergency department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise on quality improvement protocols and/or review potential protocols to evaluate their effect on standard nursing procedures; * Develop and evaluate patient educational materials for HIV negative test results that will outline risk reduction, prevention strategies and indications for repeat testing; * Design and implement training for nurses and other health care personnel about general HIV information and testing protocols and procedures; * Train physicians and nurses in disclosure and linkage to care; * Create "preliminary positive packet" for patients that test positive with key materials and information; * Liaise between multiple departments and maintain active communication among all stakeholders to ensure program success. * Assist with data collection and synthesis * Evaluate quality improvement program effectiveness to develop improved methods; advise on evaluation methodology; analyze results and recommend and/or take appropriate action.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from a State Board of Nursing approved school of nursing AND two years of professional nursing experience; OR, Associate's degree or diploma in Nursing from a State Board of Nursing approved school of nursing AND four years of professional nursing experience. Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona; OR, possesses a temporary license from the Arizona State Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse; permanent license from the Arizona State Board of Nursing required within four (4) months of employment.

Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one year experience working as a nurse in an urban emergency department. * Experience and comfort in discussing STDs and HIV/AIDS. * Public health knowledge and ability to work with diverse populations. * Ability to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Public Health and Master's Degree in Nursing. * Proficient in Spanish and basic French. * Patient health education experience including HIV testing and counseling. * Certified HIV tester and counselor. * Experience in writing and designing educational materials for health care settings. * Experience in nursing care for patients infected with HIV. * Experience delivering HIV test results in an Emergency Department. * Three years in HIV related work.
