We are looking for a research programmer to serve as Lead Engineer on a large research project involving forecasting and explaining technical emergence through extraction of information from the full text of scientific journal articles. Columbia University is the lead organization and there are 4 other universities on the team. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining and modifying the system architecture, developing new system components as required, building and maintaining the database for the system, and managing a group of Linux virtual machines for the group. The successful candidate is expected to have the following experience and skills:

? Experience managing large software projects.
? Strong Java programming skills and a close familiarity with core and 3rd party libraries.
? Strong object-oriented programming and design skills.
? Skill with processing and analysis of big data.
? Experience with Linux system administration.
? Knowledge about Natural Language Processing.
? Experience with database systems, preferably MySql.
? Experience with Network Analysis preferable.
? Good at switching between tasks and assisting project members.
? Knowledge of VMWare preferable.
? Knowledge of UIMA preferable.
? Skilled at interacting with internal and external partners.
? Devoted user of industry best practices and test-driven development

Minimum Qualifications for Grade
Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Bachelors' degree and/or the equivalent. Minimum of 3-5 years' related experience required. Fluent in Java, knowledge of natural language processing.

Preferred Qualifications

MS or PhD in Computer Science. Experience with natural language processing and tools (e.g. parsers or summarization)
