GENERAL FUNCTION

The Specialist, Aquatics is the transformational leader which is grounded in aquatics operations and functional expertise that will lead and elevate the Y Movement's national stature in the area of aquatics. This position will also enhance member associations' ability to provide aquatic-related programs and activities that strengthen the health and well-being of program participants, promote youth development, and fulfill the YMCA's mission.

The Specialist, Aquatics will continually evolve the vision for the role that the Y movement can play in the area of aquatics to ensure its most significant strategic impact. The position provides insightful thought leadership, strategy development, innovation, and resources to foster the growth and development of the Aquatic programs specialty area.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Bachelor's degree in education, elementary education, or a related-field required. Master's degree in child development, administration, non-profit management or a related field is preferred
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of work related experience, with at least five years in management and leadership of aquatics programs is required
  • Extensive background developing and delivering strategic solutions in aquatics
  • Experience creating and implementing innovative aquatic programs
  • Multi-Team Leader certification preferred
  • Advanced technical knowledge and expertise in aquatics is required
  • Ability to understand, connect and implement other Y-USA organizational priorities into aquatic specialty areas
  • Experience with YMCAs of different sizes or similar association setting preferred
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides thought leadership, strategy development, innovation, and resources to foster the growth and development of the Aquatic programs specialty area
  • Encourages member associations to operate within governmental regulations, accreditation requirements, and YMCA best practices to ensure safe, high-quality, age-appropriate and mission-based programs
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and spokesperson at Y-USA in the aquatics program specialty area, which includes but is not limited to disseminating content expertise and encouraging knowledge sharing
  • Integrates safety, child abuse prevention, risk management and legal issues into the aquatics programs
  • Partners with Training and Leadership Development department to develop aquatics program training curricula and certification processes
  • Assess the need, conducts research, and develops new resources to support growth and development of aquatics programs
  • Supports movement wide specialty group teams in aquatics
  • Serves on cross-functional teams and ensures the success of movement-wide initiatives, e.g., government relations, media relations, research, corporate relations, and marketing
  • Oversees and stewards grants that fund Y-USA aquatics initiatives
  • Develops and maintains relationships with national aquatics and other related organizations
  • Ensures accomplishment of the approved annual chart of work
  • Manages budgets and other resources within the policies and procedures of Y-USA
  • Shares responsibility for supervising support personnel in the program specialty area
  • Develop and execute a content plan for the Aquatic designated Exchange site to further knowledge sharing in line with knowledge management governance policies
  • Develop and execute a community engagement plan that encourages members to visit and engage with your online community in line with knowledge management governance policies
  • Performs other duties as assigned by National Director, Health and Well-being

EFFECT ON END RESULTS/STRATEGIC IMPACT This position enhances the Y Movement's role as an innovator and leading provider of aquatic programs and, thereby, serves to strengthen the Y's role as leader in youth development and health and well-being. This position also strengthens local YMCAs' delivery of aquatic programs. Further emphasis is placed on the importance of valuing individuals, programs that support holistic learning, and demonstrating the YMCA's values (caring, honesty, respect and responsibility).
