UW Dean of Medicine IT has an outstanding opportunity for a SQL Database Administrator position. The Senior Computer Specialist provides essential database administration and support activities in collaboration with the Department's Senior DBA. This position is responsible for database administration, application installation and patching, application upgrades, performance tuning, data load process management, backup, security, and 24/7 systems monitoring.

This position must successfully research, design, develop, test and maintain database systems of a highly complex nature for UW Dean of Medicine IT. These systems are critical to a large number of external clients and to UW Medicine’s multi-lateral academic, administrative, and research mission. Activities span Client-Server and PC platforms, utilizing a variety of software tools. Focus is on providing interfaces that result in timely, high quality data, for administrative and financial retrospective analysis that supports UW Medicine's mission and operational goals.

UW Dean of Medicine relies on enterprise-wide technological solutions, applications, and databases to enable timely delivery of reliable information to its customers. These systems provide a wide range of functions critical to the School of Medicine including admissions, credentialing, and financial data management. This position provides valuable assistance in upholding and improving existing service standards to support those functions.

  • Support ongoing database operations. Perform programming responsibilities and provide clear documentation of SSMS modules. Monitor application access to comply with security requirements. Analyze, map, transform and load data between a variety of data formats and systems. Follow departmental and team standards for programming, configuration control, quality assurance, and version releases. Thoroughly test and document all operational processes, including monthly loads and new tables. Oversee regular SQL backups and restores. Share programming responsibilities as necessary to backup other DBA duties. Share on-call rotation with other team members.

  • Assist with the administration, maintenance, and support of the department’s high availability servers and hosted applications. Actively monitor systems to ensure the 99.99% uptime. Schedule, initiate and audit periodic performance processes. Follow norms for handling change requests, support requests, and incidents. Intelligently escalate requests to the appropriate teams as needed.

  • Consult with Department members and clients to identify needs. Participate in workgroups related to development and upgrade projects. Effectively communicate application issues to fellow team members including problem reporting, collaborative troubleshooting and issue documentation. Help investigate and handle complaints relating to database performance. Respond promptly to customer requests, phone calls and emails. Follow high standards of customer service.

  • Provide and organize related documentation. Learn and maintain file management processes including appropriate naming conventions and retention cycles. Develop departmental guidelines for standard system builds. Develop, test, maintain, and implement system builds based on the guidelines. Continually reassess the departmental requirements and evaluate new technology for implementation into the standard build. Document activities and closing remarks accurately in the ticket system before close.

  • Demonstrate accountability for own professional growth and competency by seeking opportunities and activities that provide for skill development and self-improvement. Stay current on emerging technologies by reading industry publications, attending seminars and classes, developing relationships with vendors and peers, evaluating software and products. Share information with colleagues so all can benefit and incorporate into new solutions and plans.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field , plus 2+ years of progressively responsible SQL database administration, development, implementation and support experience on a broad range of applications, using Microsoft SQL 2005/2008/2012 in a Windows environment.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • Technical education including 3-5 years of SQL development experience.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining sound SQL backup and recovery policies and procedures.
  • Experience with C code, ASP, .Net, Visual Basic, database and systems design preferred.
  • Training in Data Warehouse (DW) development and Business Intelligence tools.
  • Experience with application tuning and performance monitoring in a VMware environment.
  • Experience with ETL processes, interface development, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with application development and support in the healthcare industry.
  • Recognition of ITIL and change management best practices.
  • Experience using VMWare tools in a complex client-server environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of UNIX/Windows server environment, DBA/SA coordination, and general knowledge of PC desktop applications is very desirable.

    Condition of Employment:

    A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification may be required prior to hire.

  • Available to work off-hours and weekends as needed. Able and willing to be on-call 24x7 as needed.
