Department Description

The Special Use Hi-Rel Capacitors Department designs and develops custom film and Mica capacitors for NW and other National Securityapplications. The department uses the Realize Product Subsystem (RPSS) to realize Mark Quality (QC-1) product that covers the complete product realization cycle of requirements, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery and stockpile support either through our partners at the Kansas City Plant (KCP) or via the Sandia External Production program (SEP). We employ defect-prevention strategies to gain an understanding of design margin during the developmentcycle. The group's unique capabilities lie in the ability to address multiple challenging requirements related to meeting high reliability numbers over extremely long life, radiation tolerance, nuclear safety requirements, and size & weight restrictions. Job Summary

Performs work as an entry- to mid-level member of the workforce within a science and engineering environment involving graduate-level assignments, which may include research, application of project design and diagnostics, testing and documentation, development and analysis of technology options, and assembly and troubleshooting.

Primary Job Duties

Job assignments vary upon organization, discipline preference, and specific job requirements as defined in the job specification.
Duties may include working collaboratively with technical staff on developmental research, analysis of technology and engineering options, project design, testing, formulating conclusions, data collection, and analyzing experimental data.

Job Specifications

An R&D graduate student is needed to provide technical expertise in the development and deep understanding of custom, special use, electronic products using accelerated testing methods. Students work will be focused on Capacitors, both COTS and Mylar or Mica-Paper Dielectrics CDU type. Test methods include HALT, HASS, CALT, HAST, and partial discharge testing. In addition, a working knowledge of normal stress and overstress test-to-failure methods, degradation analysis, success-run testing, and a deep understanding of Weibull Analysis is needed. Knowledge of the Physics of Failure common to capacitors is also needed. The ideal candidate will have the ability to team with others and communicate easily and effectively with technical staff, management, and customers. MS/PhD degree GPA should be equivalent to at least 3.5/4.0 (3.75 preferred) and BS degree GPA should be equivalent to at least 3.2/4.0 (3.5 preferred).

Required

The successful candidate must meet the following Sandia Student Intern Requirements: Official acceptance into an accredited university's graduate program, full-time enrollment during the spring term immediately preceding the internship period (9 credit hours), a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0, and the ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer. U.S. citizenship.

1) B.S. degree in a science or engineering discipline with a GPA equivalent to at least 3.2/4.0 (3.5 preferred).
2) Outstanding interpersonal and teaming skills.
3) Expertise in the use of Accelerated test methods such as HALT, HASS, CALT, HAST, or partial discharge testing for evaluating development builds and monitoring production.
4) Working knowledge of normal stress and overstress test-to-failure methods, degradation analysis, success- run testing, and a deep understanding of Weibull Analysis.
5) Excellent writing and presentation skills.
6) Must be a US citizen and capable of obtaining a DOE Q security clearance.

Desired

1) M.S. degree in a science or engineering discipline with a GPA equivalent to at least 3.5/4.0 (3.75 preferred).
2) Understanding of the failure modes of our product types.
3) Experience in applying other defect prevention best practices such as Mistake-Proofing, Fagan Inspections, CONOPs Reviews, and Product Acceptance Requirements Maps.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
