• Defines and coordinates the activities (line and/or matrix) for multiple projects spanning disciplines and therapeutic areas
• Demonstrates a strong knowledge of scientific principles and technologies across pharmaceutical sciences and the drug discovery and development process from hit identification to IND
• Serves as a consultant to senior management
• Advises senior management on the value of new or projected areas of technological research and advancement.
• Helps establish and implement strategic research plans that could impact the goals of PRTM
• Investigates feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to assigned project(s); as appropriate, identifies and applies novel scientific principles and concepts to advance project goals; may conceive new scientific concepts in order to make previously unrecognized connections
• Maintains awareness of competition within the scope of multiple projects
• Acts as a resource for general competitive awareness
• Maintains presence in the research community through manuscript preparation and publication of manuscripts as appropriate in nationally or internationally recognized journals as well as presentations at major meetings and /or universities
• Acts as a liaison with corporate partners and spokesperson to potential partners and influences these partnerships to achieve goals expeditiously
• Participates in obtaining new company business and/or advancing key programs and identifying new opportunities with respect to novel, innovative research and technology developments
• Contributes to long-range corporate planning
• Helps to determine scope and limitations of possible patentable inventions and formulates patent strategies
• Identifies patentable inventions, helps prioritize patent applications across projects and participates in the preparation of patent applications
• Leads and manages outsourced scientific functions, most commonly synthetic chemistry staff but may also include crystallography and associated molecular modeling as well as other functions that may not be strictly chemistry related (e.g., DMPK, discovery toxicology, etc.); since this outsourced staffing may be located on different continents, an ability to manage effectively across time zones and cultures is

Essential Functions
50% Functions as a chemistry Project Leader for a hit-to-lead and/or Lead Optimization project. Investigates feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to assigned project(s). As appropriate, identifies and applies novel scientific principles and concepts to advance project goals; may conceive new scientific concepts in order to make previously unrecognized connections.

25% Leads and manages outsourced scientific functions, most commonly synthetic chemistry staff but may also include crystallography and associated molecular modeling as well as other functions that may not be strictly chemistry related (e.g., DMPK, discovery toxicology, etc.). Since this outsourced staffing may be located on different continents, an ability to manage effectively across time zones and cultures is essential.

25% Advises senior management on the value of new or projected areas of technological research and advancement. Helps establish and implement strategic research plans that could impact the goals of PRTM.

Minimum education requirements
PhD

Experience required
10+ Years

Knowledge & skills (general and technical)
Experienced project leader with a proven ability to work closely with medicinal chemists, biologists, computational chemists, preclinical development scientists and CPS scientists to develop relevant SARs and drive projects from inception to IND submission.

Experience leading CNS projects preferred but not required.

Experience leading and managing external FTEs from global CROs.

Strong communications skills.
