The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for instructing various levels of swimming skills and supervising children in the Learn-To-Swim Program. An employee in this position has some potential for occupational exposure to human blood or other potentially infectious materials as a result of the performance of the employee’s duties.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)
Plan, conduct, and evaluate Swimming and Water Safety Courses.
Monitor participant’s practice and provide corrective feedback and encouragement.
Develop lesson plans for each class.
Maintain accurate records of attendance of children in the learn-to-swim program and complete proper paper work.
Ensure children receive course completion certificates when course is finished.
Communicate with parents/guardians regarding child’s skill level.
Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of facility and emergency procedures.
Maintain knowledge of current teaching methods and swimming techniques.
Clean area and pick up equipment after each class.
Advise the Learn-To-Swim Program Assistant and Coordinator of Recreation & Fitness on significant matters and support the achievement of institutional goals.
Take inventory and inspect equipment for Learn-To-Swim program.
Assist lifeguards in providing first aid as necessary.
Advise the Health & Fitness Specialist and Coordinator of Recreation & Fitness on significant matters and support the achievement of institutional goals.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate, equivalent certification or teaching experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
(The individual must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.)
Positive human relations and communication skills.
Must be able to work well with both staff and students of all ages from children to the very elderly.
Applicants must pass a skills test showing proficiency in a variety of strokes and skills including front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breast stroke, side stroke, butterfly, treading water, floating and diving.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Ability to work at an indoor or outdoor aquatic facility.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Current American Red Cross CPR certificate or equivalent.
Current American Red Cross First Aid certificate or equivalent.
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate or its equivalent.
Applicant must maintain current certifications.
Applicant must successfully complete the OCCC quarterly safety training.
Applicant must complete required in-service training.
The Learn to Swim hours are as follows-
Fall and Spring: Tues/Thurs 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. and Sat. 9:00a.m. to 12:30p.m.
Summer: Mon-Thurs 9:00a.m.-12:30p.m. and 4:00p.m. to 8:30p.m.
