1. Receptionist Duties
Receives, greets, and directs patients, visitors, and hospital personnel arriving on or calling the patient care unit.

Maintains knowledge of all patient care activities, patient location, and is able to provide information and direction regarding the same.

Receives requests from patient’s families and refers requests to nursing staff or appropriate hospital personnel.

Answers the telephone, taking and delivering messages.

During emergency situations, functions as source for communication, initiating STAT requests and orders.

Maintains a clean, safe, and functional working environment in the nursing station.

2. Secretarial and Clerical Duties

Records and delivers messages for patients and staff, communicates all pertinent patient care and general environmental information to the nurse.

Maintains adequate supply of forms and office materials on assigned unit.

Updates assignment boards, bulletin boards, and other communication sources.

Maintains a clean, safe, and functional working environment in the nursing station.

3. Patient Chart Activities

Initiates, assembles and maintains charts for all patients on assigned unit.

Transcribes physician orders; completes all necessary forms, requisitions and communications necessary to implement orders.

Initiates and maintains information in patient Kardex.

Files laboratory and diagnostic reports in appropriate patient chart.

Keeps the patient chart in correct, functional order as prescribed by hospital policy; also monitors location of chart at all times and prepares transfer of chart to Health Information Services (HIS).

Makes copies of chart necessary for transfer of patient to other health care facility, stamping or marking information " Confidential ".

Upon request, compiles statistical data from patient charts.

4. Other Duties

Attends inservice programs as assigned to learn new forms, procedures, developmental skills, etc.

Initiates and prepares patient charges.

Transports patients for discharge, OR, etc., and performs other duties as delegated by the nurse.

Contributes to maintenance of a quiet working atmosphere.

Transports lab slips and specimens to department.

Adheres to hospital policy of strict confidentiality regarding all hospital and patient information.

Follows hospital policy regarding appropriate dress code.

Cooperates, works with, and has good rapport with co-workers, nursing personnel, ancillary services, physicians, and supervisory staff.

Calls in the surgery staff for unscheduled surgeries when Surgery is normally closed, as directed by the RN.

Obtains items from Materials Management when needed.

Obtains old records from HIS.

Recorder at codes.

Completes unit clerk competencies annually.

High school graduate or equivalent work experience, including ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology, and basic office equipment skills (computer, fax machine, copy machine, telephone).

Completion of technical school training program or previous hospital experience as a unit clerk, preferred.

Able to perform detailed assignments, work under pressure, and relate well to patients, hospital staff, and visitors.

High degree of accuracy required.
