Do you thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment where the rewards are many? If so, then the San Mateo County Medical Center (SMMC) and Clinics has an exciting career opportunity for you!

Besides being a full-scope Medical Center and Hospital, the San Mateo Medical Center operates six dental clinics located in San Mateo (39th Avenue Clinic), Menlo Park (Willow Clinic), Redwood City (Fair Oaks Clinic), Daly City (Daly City Clinic), Coastside Clinic (Half Moon Bay), and a Mobile Dental Clinic. These clinics treat children and adults, homeless and transitional populations, and patients with HIV diagnosis.

The Clinics are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and some evenings. There is an oral surgeon at the San Mateo facility every Wednesday and two days a month at Willow Clinic. The Willow Clinic in Menlo Park houses a denture clinic where patients are treated by University of Pacific Third Year Residents, along with the Specialty Clinic operated through Ryan White funding. Pregnant women on Medi-Cal can also obtain dental services in all of the clinics.

As an SMMC Dental Assistant, you will:
Prepare patients for dental treatment
Assist the dentist at chairside
Mix cements, work with composite, amalgam and impression materials
Respond to the oral hygiene needs of a low-income population
Take digital x-rays
Respond to patient emergencies
Maintain office and equipment in a sanitary and orderly condition
Enter information into patient's electronic record
Triage drop-in patients
Gather and complete necessary insurance information and forms The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and multi-tasker, capable of scheduling appointments and processing insurance claims, as well as have pedodontia experience, and possess an x-ray certificate. In addition, you will possess a positive, "can do" attitude and be an exceptional team player. You should possess good organizational skills and be open to discussing Clinic operations. We are seeking Dental Assistants who are motivated in adding ideas to improve work flow and demonstrate the willingness to learn and adapt to new situations. Possession of a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) license is preferred.

Dental Assistants rotate and must be available to work at any of our dental clinics. Transportation to each work site is the employee's responsibility. NOTE: Positions designated as bilingual receive premium pay in the amount of $45-$60/biweekly.

Qualifications:
Licensure/Certification : Candidate must possess a Certificate of Examination for Radiation Safety from the California Board of Dental Examiners AND Certificate of completion in Basic Life Support course as approved by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

Other: Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is completion of a course of instruction for dental assistants.

Knowledge of: Preparation of patients for examination; methods of use, care and sterilization of instruments and equipment; dental hygiene and prophylaxis; dental X-ray techniques and safety procedures; dental terminology; and office procedures and record keeping.

Skill/Ability to: Take, develop and evaluate dental X-rays; work tactfully with patients and other personnel under stressful conditions; and respond appropriately to patient emergencies during treatment or surgery;

The interview may be comprised of a combined Civil Service and departmental panel process. Depending on the number of applications, a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position. Therefore, all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
