Linux System Administrator

The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC, an inttramural Research and Development division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires the services of a Systems Administrator who will be responsible for supporting the development of R&D systems as well as systems administration for Linux systems. The position reports to the Chief, Communications Engineering Branch (CEB), and has the following principal duties:

Systems administration for Linux servers, including configuring, installing, upgrading, troubleshooting, security patching and remediating, maintaining hardware and software for workstations and servers and upgrading of IT systems and components to provide services that enable customers to effectively apply IT to business requirements.

Has knowledge of tools and mechanisms for distributing new and upgraded software to ensure customers receive current versions of supported software, as they become available. Shall be able to work with other senior staff to recommend and design systems architecture and topology from both general and specific perspectives.

Basic Qualifications
• B.S degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline, or at least five (5) years of relevant system administration experience.
• Good working knowledge of Linux/ server administration capabilities(certification preferred).
• Experience with databases, to include, but not limited to Oracle, MySQL/SQL Server.
• Experience and knowledge of hardware and software in an R&D environment.
• Experience in creating, tuning, maintaining virtual machines (e.g.,Hyper-V).
• Experience in administering systems in a networked environment.
• Experience in Java-based software packages for supporting Web applications.
• Excellent ability to communicate concepts, ideas and systems through oral and written communication skills
• Ability to document projects and provide status reports.
• Excellent organization and time management skills, and flexibility to handle a variety of tasks, and shift priorities as needed.
• Experience of delivering services in a production environment following ITIL a plus
• Cloud Management/Virtualization (i.e. Amazon EC2 and S3 or others) experience a plus
UNIX experience, especially Linux (Redhat and CentOS)
Desired skills
• Prior NIH experience a plus.
• Some familiarity with two or more of the following languages and software: Java, C, C++, Apache HTTP and Tomcat, Nutch/Hadoop shell scripting
• Some familiarity with any of the following: NLP, image processing, machine learning techniques, distributed computing.
• Windows operating systems
• SAN, NAS storage solutions (e.g., NetApp)
• RHCE certification
• Windows operating systems
• Excellent oral, and written communication skills, and ability to document projects and provide status reports.
• Excellent team and interpersonal skills. Ability to both take direction and work in a self-directed environment, effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts, and ability to work as an effective team member.
• Excellent organization and time management skills, and flexibility to handle a variety of tasks, and shift priorities as needed.
