Job Summary

The position will oversee the design and implementation of the Foundation's internal IT systems and infrastructure projects to ensure alignment with organizational goals. This person will also work with external vendors to provide effective delivery of networks, systems and client support services.

This position is based in our San Francisco office.


This is a 'roll up your sleeves' position and duties include:
Office computing and telecommunication infrastructure management:

Development and system administration of office infrastructure such as servers, backups, VPN, office email service

Management of local network in main office, including wireless network and network security

Management of office VoIP phone system based on Asterisk

General IT Planning and vendor management:
Direct vendors and contractors on the IT projects

Assist in the development and management of office IT budget including provision and maintenance of hardware, internet connectivity, phones, and services such as user training and support

Equipment and software purchases, inventories and audits

Development and management of relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and other providers

Client Support:
Deployment, updating and troubleshooting of Mac and PC hardware running either primarily MacOS or Ubuntu Linux, along with standard office software including Gmail, OpenOffice and Quickbooks

Capacity planning, risks mitigations, backups, security patching, and password changes with users

Evangelism on behalf of open source software and active support of users transitioning to open source from proprietary software

Writing end-user documentation for office procedures


At least 3+ years in an IT support responsibility in a mid-sized office environment

Bachelor's degree of equivalent experience

Experience with Vendor Management

Proven network administration skills to support office network backbone and wifi, and network security

Competent with Linux server administration, and desktop support for Mac OS and Linux

Worked with network and server monitoring tools

Responsive client service orientation: able to anticipate, understand and meet the needs of a focused team of professionals

Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to clearly communicate with non-technical users

Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities including balancing urgent needs with long-term planning work

Be comfortable in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment

Proven ability to proactively secure and improve office IT systems

Must be able to lift 20 lbs or more, accommodations can be made should this be an issue

Familiarity with Asterisk phone system is a plus

Familiarity with the LAMP stack, LDAP and DNS a plus

Experience with Perl or other scripting language a plus

Experience with wikis and participatory production environments is a plus

Understanding of the free culture movement is a plus
