Camping - Camp Director (Mirror Lake, NH) Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors in camp administration, related degree, or experience in camp management
  • At least three seasons of camp administrative experience preferred
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in camp setting
  • Ability to creatively schedule programs, facilities and staff
  • Ability and experience in supervising staff and campers
  • Ability to meet and speak with the public
  • Ability to plan, originate, organize, and carry out daily and special programs
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control, strong supervisory and counseling skills
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications preferred
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Ability and willingness to contribute at key times on a year round basis
  • Belief in camper-camp-self, exhibit a sincere interest in children, comprehend their needs and place them and the summer camp ahead of personal desires
  • Demonstrate leadership experience in managing a variety of programs, motivational skills and ability to communicate both orally and in writing
Camp Goals The Camp Director takes an active, on-going role in teaching, evaluation and leadership function of all campers and staff under his/her direction. Helps coordinate, organize, and facilitate two-month program, including staff, training, and program development. Coordinates all aspects of the program and strives to insure that all programming teaches the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

General Responsibility Responsible for all summer camp operations. This includes, but is not limited to program, staff management, and parent interaction. Work, at times throughout the year, with the Senior Program Director, Business Manager, Facilities Director, and other directors in order to build positive, safe programs for all.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Define and plan program to reflect Camp goals, vision, and strategic plan
  • Ongoing recruitment of campers and staff
  • Plan and run pre-camp and in-service trainings
  • Supervise opening and closing day for campers and staff
  • Develop routines, schedules, and procedures for camp operation
  • Assign staff activities and other responsibilities
  • Assign campers and staff to cabins
  • Observe staff and activities and make improvements on an ongoing basis
  • Maintain program equipment inventories and highlight equipment needs
  • Control expenses in keeping within the budgeted amounts. During the summer gain approval for expenditures from Senior Program Director or Business Manager
  • Maintain and review records and evaluations of all programs, operations, staff, and facilities
  • Prepare an evaluation and summary of current season including inventories, staff evaluations, camper reports, and recommendations for the following season according to written guidelines
  • Organize and/or approve trips out of camp for program, supplies, doctors visits, and crisis management
  • Responsible for daily inspection of cabins, wash houses, and general grounds in regard to cleanliness of personal items of campers, graffiti and removal, and general organization
  • Together with Senior Staff, counselors, and campers plan and execute evening activities and special event days
  • Be responsible for the welfare of each individual in Camp and do all possible to solve problems of campers and staff alike with regards to health, cleanliness, discipline, etc.
  • Help ensure morale of staff by monitoring that staff get enough rest, time and days off, and recreational opportunities available to them
  • Evaluate Senior Staff and cabin staff twice per season and develop a written staffing plan for the following season
  • As appropriate, speak with participants and camper parents, return all calls within 24 hours
  • Formally meet with the Senior Staff and all staff weekly, touch base with Senior Staff daily, and attend weekly director/exempt staff meetings
  • Help to provide a positive cooperative environment for all programs
  • Work with property management team in order to continue systems for the health, safety, and cleanliness of Camp
  • Work with property management team to make improvements to Camp buildings and grounds
  • Other duties as assigned
Essential Functions
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participation (age and skill levels), and provide necessary instruction to campers
  • Supervise camp section/village directors, program directors, counseling staff, and CITs giving them direction, resources, and leadership
  • Oversee all program areas ensuring safety, quality instruction and fun. Ensure all programs follow established guidelines, including federal, state, and local regulations as well as ACA standards
  • Assist supervisory staff and counselors with the recognition of camper needs and be prepared to support or follow through on their efforts
  • Open communication and flexibility between all four camps. Ready to respond and assist wherever necessary
  • Uphold and exemplify the principles of the YMCA
  • Visual, auditory, and physical ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities
Salary for the 2013 summer: $4k-$7k
