Primary Function & Major Responsibilities Responsible for the accurate and timely cleaning, inspection, assembly, enclosure and sterilization of surgical, diagnostic and procedural instrumentation and equipment to meet customer and patient needs.Performs manual cleaning accurately and efficiently to remove contaminating infectious microorganisms and other bodily fluid contaminates from reusable instrumentation and equipment. Performs manual cleaning and disinfection for heat and moisture sensitive devices to make safe for employee’s handlings these items without personal protective equipment.Inspects instruments for cleanliness to prevent a nosocomial (healthcare facility acquired) infection. Inspects instruments for defects and proper functionality to minimize damage to bodily organs, vessels and/or tissue. Uses various electronic tools to inspect electro-surgical instruments and cables for defects that if were to go undetected could result in a patient injury or death.Performs the re-assembly of instrument sets accurately and efficiently and in accordance to recipe card instructions.Performs packaging tasks accurately and efficiently and in accordance to department policies and procedures and/or the manufacturer’s instructions for use.Operates processing equipment such as instrument washers, sterilizers, biological incubators and other equipment in accordance to department policies and procedures and/or the manufacturer’s instructions for use.Completes sterilization, high-level disinfection and other legal documents accurately and in accordance to organization and department policies and procedures.Performs patient medical equipment cleaning accurately and efficiently and in accordance to department policies and procedures to prevent patient injury, a death or a nosocomial infection.Performs surgical case cart assembly accurately and efficiently, collecting and organizing disposable and reusable items on a cart in accordance to assembly card instructions.Participates with other staff and leaders in department and interdepartmental quality, process, customer service and other improvement efforts.Performs all position-related tasks without deviation to department policies and proceduresInitiates personal education and development. Regularly participates in HealthEast and profession related education. Maintains knowledge of current technologies, practices and trends.Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of the job to ensure appropriate maintenance of all privacy related issues.Performs all other related duties as requested to meet departmental needs.

Qualifications
Education:
High School or General Equivalency (Education) Diploma or equivalent. Sterile Processing Technician Certification, Surgical Technician certification or equivalent experience. If not already certified as a Sterile Processing Technician, the new employee is required to prepare for and successfully pass a national Sterile Processing Technician certification examination after their first 12-months of employment.

Experience:
The successful completion of a sterile processing or surgical technician program ora minimum of one years experience working in an acute care facility including knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment.Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Has basic computer skills;Is able to perform a step-by-step procedure accurately and efficiently;Is able to perform very detail oriented work repetitiously for long periods of time;Is able to work in a fast paced environment;Is able to work in an environment that frequently responds to STAT and ASAP customer needs;Is able to perform tasks with minimal error. For example no more than or one or two errors in a 12-month period;Is able to work independently with minimal assistance from others;Is able to think critically to make important at the moment decisions;Is able to demonstrate and provide exceptional customer service with every interaction;Is knowledge of and can apply professional and regulatory standards to perform their work and to meet personal accountability responsibilities;Is knowledgeable of surgical and medical instruments and product supplies by proper name and what the item is generally used for;Is knowledgeable of and can perform manual reusable medical device cleaning, inspection, testing, assembly and packaging;Is knowledgeable of and can operate automated sterile processing equipment, to include but not limited to instrument cleaners, sterilization, biomedical multi-meter, package sealers, and others.Physical Job Requirements for a Typical Eight-Hour Workday: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds for 50% othe time;Ability to stand statically and/or walk for 100% othe time;Ability to forward reach/bend for 33% othe time.Ability to perform overhead reaches for 33% othe timeAbility to crouch or squat for 33% othe timeAbility to lift or carry for 66% othe timeAbility to push or pull for 66% othe timeAbility to grip or grasp for 66% othe timeAbility to climb (e.g. a step stool) for 33% othe timeColor perception testing (assessment for color vision deficiency) interpretation must be normal upon hire.Regular/Temporary
