As part of Liberty Mutual Commercial Insurance group, the Property Risk Engineering group is recognized as a leader in the industry by providing proactive property loss prevention services to help identify, quantify and mitigate or eliminate serious threats to our customers' business. Our highly qualified, in-house staff includes engineers with backgrounds including Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Industrial and Fire Protection Engineering.
Our engineers conduct Risk Surveys to advise customers of possible exposures to their business. The analysis that follows these visits may include things like physical and human element recommendations; water supply and fire pump testing data and risk quality benchmarking.
Our Consulting Services help ensure our customer's property and businesses are protected from hazards associated with change and growth. Services include:
New construction plan and specification reviews
Fire suppression system plan and specification reviews
Fire protection equipment acceptance testing and witnessing
Flood and wind hazard analysis
As an Engineering Intern, you will develop knowledge about the commercial insurance business through exposure to our engineering operation. You will focus on developing the skills necessary for success by assisting professionals with day-to-day job assignments. While your assignments will vary over time as you gain experience and skills, interns will typically perform some of the work of an entry-level engineer, such as:
Learning the basics of the Engineering Manual and codes and standards and how to use various systems and applications.
Assisting the Engineering Technical Unit with technical consultations and technical research projects as assigned. This includes assisting co-workers in researching problems and providing assistance to other departments as necessary.
Reviewing, evaluating and categorizing technical information; verifies information for accuracy/appropriateness and follows up with others for missing or questionable data; prepares and assembles documents for additional handling by the Engineering Technical Unit or others.
Entering and retrieving information of varying complexity using computer systems and applications to update records, obtain information for others and respond independently to most questions and problems.
Preparing draft reports, research papers, correspondence in support of the Engineering Technical Unit and Field Engineering operations of Property Risk Engineering.
This opportunity is for a full time internship during the summer of 2013.
As an intern, you
must be working towards a bachelor's degree (graduating in 2014 or 2015)
and possess a minimum 3.0 GPA (depending on school). In addition, the following criteria are highly recommended:
Fire Protection, Civil, Chemical, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering majors are preferred
Effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Ability to provide information in a clear, concise manner
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships
Effective analytical skills to gather information, analyze facts, and draw conclusions
